SCIENCE: Chemistry 200 - Labs & Investigations to Complement Chemistry 201
Science, Chemistry: (supplement to Chemistry 201) Students will complete labs and investigations on the topics being studied in CH 201. Together with Chemistry 201 this will meet high school homeschool requirements for Chemistry credit.
What's included
Homework
1 hour per week. Students will be expected to complete the provided lab report about their work from the week.Class Experience
US Grade 9 - 12
This class is designed to supplement my Chemistry 201 course with labs and investigations to meet the requirements for homeschool high high school chemistry credit. Students will preform hands on lab experiments with things from around their house or do an in-depth investigation about something from the Chemistry 201 material. Week 1: Mole Lab ->Explains the concept of the mole ->Lab experiment using different items found in your kitchen to examine the mole Week 2: Unit Conversion Lab -> Explains unit conversions ->Lab experiment using different items found in your kitchen to examine unit conversions, focusing on typical baking measurements (teaspoons, tablespoons, cups…etc.) Week 3: Balancing Chemical Compounds Investigation -> Students will complete an investigation about how to balance chemical compounds Week 4: Classifying Chemical Equations Investigation -> Students will complete an investigation about how to balance chemical compounds Week 5: Classifying Chemical Equations Investigation -> Students will complete an investigation about how to balance chemical reactions This is a flexible schedule course, meaning that there are no live meetings. The labs or investigations in this course match the material being covered in Chemistry 201, so students are expected to complete that course material first before attempting their lab or investigation for this class. To increase interaction between students, there will be weekly experiments and the students will be asked to post their experimental results and anything they learned to the Outschool classroom either as a video or pictures. This will allow the students to share and discuss what each other are discovering about chemistry hands-on. Also, each week the teacher will divide the students up into different groups and they will be given a topic from the week's material to discuss and present a 5-10 minute session on. This way the students will hear more about topics in the class from their classmates and not just the teacher. Each week, a lab or investigation assignment will be posted along with detailed procedures for them to follow, and a fill-in-the blank lab report for the students to complete. The completed lab report will be uploaded to the classroom (either scanned or picture taken) for feedback from the teacher. There will be a discussion thread where students can ask for help from the class and the teacher. Students are expected to complete the lab report each week. The teacher is always be available via message (either in the classroom discussion or private message) and will typically reply within 12 hours, but never more than 24 hours unless extenuating circumstances.
Learning Goals
Additional hands on practice of the material being presented in Chemistry 201.
