Science Camp for Young Kids: Sinking Ships & Exploding Volcanoes
Class experience
US Grade 1 - 3
In this one week 4-day summer Science camp, learners will design and make their own floating device and experiment with different objects to see if they float or sink. They will make predictions about different objects of different weights to see how much their boat can carry before it sinks. Learners will be introduced to vocabulary, concepts, make predictions, experiment with combining [safe] ingredients to create reactions and explain their thinking, explore the relationship between oil...
Learners will learn: • the scientific method • surface [water] tension • understand chemical reactions • change variables to make experiments work • observe and ask questions • gather data, measure, predict and draw conclusions • design and draw a floatation device • perform different experiments • and much, much more *** SPECIAL NOTE TO PARENTS: A sibling discount is available for this camp. This "sibling discount" is available after first sibling enrolls. Please contact me directly for the sibling discount to be applied for the second and third learner at time of enrolling.
Being an educator for forty + years, I've taught all subjects to students K-8 which included science classes. I've taught special needs students and designed full curriculum for K-12 students. I have a passion for experimentation, imagination, creativity and exploration. I have actual experienced watching volcanoes erupt, hiked to the top of extinct volcanoes, traveled in many types of floating devices [kayaks, zodiacs, boats, small ships, yachts, and huge cruise ships, all real life experiences that adds to my enthusiasm as I teach learners in this Science Camp for Young Kids: Sinking Ships & Exploding Volcanoes.
Homework Offered
Learner should research volcanoes and lava and bring 3-5 facts to camp. Learners can bring new ideas and questions to camp for open discussion to share. Learners may continue and expand upon what was learned in the camp session.Assessments Offered
Self assessment of progress and completed projectsGrades Offered

However, if any learner has any known reaction/s to any of the products/ingredients used in this camp, please do not allow usage. You may substitute any ingredient for a "like" ingredient. Feel free to contact me for suggestions/alternate ingredients. Learners are using different ingredients including baking soda, food colorings, and vinegar throughout the experiments. For the safety of your learner, learners are NOT to ingest any ingredients. White vinegar is NOT toxic but you must be careful where you store it because it is acidic and must NOT be swallowed as none of the ingredients used in the experiments. Swallowing vinegar can cause stomach distress so if swallowed, the mouth should be rinsed out thoroughly and immediately with water. Please make sure the learner brings the supplies listed and is ready to work. Working areas should be covered and well protected against any liquid spills. Learner may choose to wear a larger shirt to cover clothing. Googles should be worn at all times. *** SPECIAL NOTE TO PARENTS: A sibling discount is available for this camp.
