US Grade 10 - 11
Welcome to Science Summer School - a 6 week course covering the fundamental ideas of Biology. This course covers the GCSE science content, which is ideal for those in the run up to the exams, or those looking for a recap before beginning A-Levels or AP Biology. Perfect for any international equivalent of 10th or 11th Grade (US) Science. Useful as a recap, or a precursor and confidence builder before starting the new term. Also perfect for home school students looking to cover core biology concepts with an expert teacher. The course covers the key ideas of cell structure and function, cell energetics, physiology and organisation, genetics, and ecology. A full lesson break down can be found in the syllabus. Each class will begin with an opportunity to recall knowledge relevant to the days session. New content will then be delivered in a friendly, easy to understand way via a diagrams, examples, live drawn lessons. Knowledge will be checked with some questions, and then some example application questions (Exam questions or equivalent) will be shared for students to attempt and receive feedback on. As an experienced high school teacher and private tutor I have a relaxed, easy to approached style to teaching, and am confident in the core knowledge needed by students to succeed in science, and the common pitfalls and misconceptions students often fall into. Humour and anecdotes from the scientific world make lessons calm and productive, and inspiring. Confident in teaching students with a variety of educational needs including autism and ADHD, structure will be provided to support these students. Learners are expected to attempt the recall questions set (low stakes/short answers) in order to activate their memories, and listen carefully to the teacher input section. They are then encouraged to ask questions to clarify learning, either by mic or in the chat, whichever is more comfortable. They are then expected to attempt the questions at the end portion of the lesson to check their understanding of the lessons content. Content is delivered via slides or live whiteboard, with questions either displayed on the slide or sent in an attachment for students to complete. There will also be opportunities to access simulated or recorded practicals. In addition key content may be assessed in the form of online games or quizzes. I hope you will join me for the science summer camp and leave with a good understanding of the fundamental ideas in biology, feeling confident and ready to tackle whatever stage of science education comes next!
Learning Goals
Students will be confident in applying key ideas in biology to application style questions.
Students will have improved skills when it comes to designing and evaluation practicals in biology.
