Class Experience

Week 1: We will introduce ourselves and get to know each other. Each day will start with a fun guitar song often heard at summer camp. In our first session, we will be talking about the skeleton's spine. We will look at its parts and why it is so important to us. We will learn the 5 different types of vertebrae and locate them. The art project we will create, as a memory aid for the spine, will be a beaded key chain depicting the 5 different types of vertebrae. You can use any type of bead you like. You will want to find 5 different types or colors of beads for this craft.

Week 2: In week two we will talk about the skeletal anatomy of the bird's wing and how it compares to the skeletal anatomy of our human hand. We will talk about evolution and the changes in animal structures over time. There are many examples all around us. Be ready to discuss and share your opinions, I look forward to hearing them. Finally, we will create the bird/angel wing using the bead pulling technique. This technique is magical. You never know what will show up.

Week 3: OPTION 1: This week will talk about butterflies, their life cycle, and migration. Again, you will be able to perfect your chain pulling technique as we create the beautiful butterfly wings on canvas. OPTION 2: Explores the flow of blood through the heart.

Week 4: Our final week will explore chemistry, particularly the sugar molecule (glucose). This molecule is very important to both plants and animals. We will look at its role in photosynthesis and digestion. Finally, get creative as you draw your glucose molecule into a caterpillar (Gary the Glucos-e-pillar) or another animal of your choice.
Learning Goals
Goals: The goal here is to make biology fun! Science is everywhere, learn it, know it, teach it, grow it, and create it.
Students will be able to enjoy a fun four weeks of exploration in biology. They will explore singing and song. Finally, they will explore art.
Perhaps you think you can't draw, you can't paint, and you can't learn biology. Think again, you can!

Wisconsin Teaching Certificate in Science
Hello,

I am Ms. Jill. I am excited to be apart of Outschool.

I have a background in biology which has allowed me to teach science in the classroom and to learn about science in nature. You may find me with my horse or dog having adventures in the woods. I love all kinds of science.
For many years I worked with Hmong people as they assimilated into my town in Wisconsin, USA. I have also worked with Chinese students both online and in the classroom. I enjoy meeting new people in this way and making our world a little smaller.
At the heart of everything is science and wellness because it allows us to do all sorts of things and to be better humans. I taught Human Biology to beginning nursing students at Northcentral Technical College, Wausau, Wi. I love testing myself to remember the skeletal bones of the body.
This makes Halloween a favorite time for me!!

I have always enjoyed teaching that inspires. Now, I hope to do that here at Outschool. I like having fun with facts and the freedom of our imaginations. Join me, won't you?
