Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 8
**If you don't see an available time list please send me a message with potential dates/times for your student!

I've always loved reading and writing creative fiction. It gives us the chance to explore beautiful new worlds while letting characters deal with real and complex issues that reflect our own lives. The goal for our class is to help students improve their writing skills by addressing key aspects of the writing process. Students will be challenged along the way to incorporate our lessons as they work on writing their own short stories and scenes that accompany the weekly topics which we will cover.

Each week we will cover a new writing skill or technique, study some examples and challenge students to use it in their own writing! The following is an outline of how the first few classes will begin, with additional topics being incorporated according to student interests and needs:

Class 1 - How to Begin Writing
Class 2 - Creating Interesting Characters
Class 3 - Writing an Engaging Plot
Class 4 - Designing Your Setting
Class 5 - Theme, Tone and Pacing
Class 6 - The Hero's Journey
Class 7 - Showing Vs Telling
Class 8 - Shape of a Story

Additionally, for special classes we may choose one successful author to learn about, read a few excerpts and discuss their writing style and approaches! This will allow students to see different patterns and strategies to become a better writer themselves.

I look forward to seeing you in class soon!

Learning Goals

To help students learn and develop their writing skills, encourage them to begin writing their own stories, and overcome the many obstacles and road blocks that prevent us from finishing our writing projects!

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello there! My name is Sean and I love to teach fun, engaging classes generally centered around history, science, and storytelling! Many of my classes involve some type of activity, story-telling, reading, writing or some other unique assignment (such as map-making!) to help students feel more invested in the material and get excited about learning more each day.

The people I learn the most from and respect the most are those who are truly passionate and engaged with the subjects they love. This is where Outschool shines because no one is forced to teach a class they don't like or teach in a way that isn't interesting to them! I find that when teachers can effectively communicate their passion about subjects to their students everyone is uplifted and comes away having grown smarter and wiser.

With every class my goal is to help your students develop powerful habits that transcend the courses they take with me. Creative thinking, reading comprehension, creative and persuasive writing, pattern recognition and logic are just some of the talents students will develop over the duration of the courses they choose. I can't wait to start working together! See you soon!
