Despite modern physics having a reputation of being very difficult to comprehend, this course first introduces, then dives into the subject in a manner accessible to students. They will have the opportunity to learn about quantum mechanics in a captivating and engaging environment. Students will gain insight into the quantum world through a popular experiment. The class will begin with an overview of the famous cat in a box experiment: Schrödinger's Cat. Students will use what they know about probability to determine the outcome of the experiment. They will leave the class with a firm understanding of how the cat can be both dead and alive, how this relates to quantum physics, and the basics of wave-particle duality. This course is on specialized topics within modern physics. The course will stray away from complex mathematics to be more accessible to students of all mathematical levels. There are no prerequisites for this class.

I am a former physicist with an undergraduate degree in physics with high departmental honors from the University of Maryland, and a graduate degree in geophysics from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego. I have worked alongside other scientists in a variety of labs including the Cryospheric Sciences Laboratory at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, the Laboratory for Satellite Altimetry at the National Atmospheric and Oceanographic Administration, and the Physics Department at the University of Maryland.
