US Grade 3 - 8
Let's have fun reaching your reading goals together! Each class we will take turns reading aloud in books that are self-chosen. Student is encouraged to choose books that meet the following criteria: 1. Interest in the subject or characters. 2. Page count between 30-70 (or more) per book. If chapter books are longer, we may read one or two in our time together. 3. Chapter books that are just on the edge of one's reading level are desirable--that way we are always being challenged to read more and learn new vocabulary. 4. BOOKS chosen from public library are excellent because they are more likely available to teacher. (Teacher will need a five-day notice from parent of what books have been chosen, so there is an opportunity to acquire the same books.) *SKILLS TO FOCUS ON: We will talk about the characters, stories, events, and emotions as we practice skills such as voice inflection, fluency, comprehension, and text connections. We will also explore new vocabulary and increase our understanding of context clues to help us gain new words we can use. The teacher will guide the student in various reading strategies to help increase speed, comprehension, and fluency. Here is a basic schedule we will follow: Week 1: 15-20 pages at each session = ~40 pages /potentially half of Book 1 Week 2: 15-20 pages at each session = ~40 pages or to end of Book 1 Week 3: 15-20 pages at each session = ~40 pages of Book 2 Week 4: 15-20 pages at each session = ~40 pages or to end of Book 2 Week 5: 15-20 pages at each session = ~40 pages of Book 3 Week 6: read to end of Book 3 and discuss guidelines for end-of-book response NOTE: I am designing this course for the student who needs reading support in addition to school efforts. It will be a private class with link provided to parent who wishes to enroll their child. Any public sections require prior parent communication with me, so that we can ensure student receives the specific guidance needed. If you wish to schedule this course, please communicate with teacher by "Ask A Question" feature next to Teacher Profile. Thank you.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Missouri Teaching Certificate in English/Language Arts
Master's Degree in Education from University of Missouri-Columbia
Hello! My name is Teacher Kathy, and I look forward to seeing you in my classroom! I teach students of all ages to become better readers and writers through integrated, interactive, and hands-on learning. I enjoy incorporating art and music into learning, and aim to reach all styles of learners: audio, visual, and kinesthetic.
My goal for each class is for students to walk away with useful, real skills in reading, writing, and vocabulary that will benefit them in whatever their own personal goals may be. Communication skills are essential in whatever successful pursuits a person may have, and my aim is to provide personalized, friendly, and fun help in becoming a better communicator: on paper, in person, online, conversationally, and (eventually) professionally.
I have been a middle school language arts and social studies teacher (15 years), and I taught life skills (3 years), introductory Spanish (2 years) and elementary art (1 year). I have been a high school English teacher in Literature, Grammar, and Practical English. I have also taught English as a Second Language online for the past 4 years. I have my Masters in Education and Curriculum from UMC.
When I'm not teaching, I enjoy reading, writing, cooking, sewing, crafts, camping and all things cats. As a writer, I have always kept journals, notes, lists, and written down my dreams in the middle of the night, in hopes of one day publishing a book (which has finally come to be a reality in 2021!) I like to spend time with my husband and six “kid-ties,” and enjoy traveling and learning about new parts of the world.
