πJoin our weekly reading class where we'll dive into an article from a recent Scholastic News magazine. Articles will be shared digitally on the screen. Scholastic News is one of the top-selling current events magazines for elementary school children. Teachers' #1 choice for current, cross-curricular nonfiction texts, Scholastic News helps elementary students explore the world from wherever they're learning. The kid-friendly stories, skill-building activities, videos, audio and more bring excitement to science, social studies and reading (from Scholastic.) *This class is designed for learners reading at a second grade reading level. This class is ideal for advanced first graders, all second graders and third graders who need additional reading support. I also have a 3rd/4th grade level and 5th/6th grade level of this class if your learner is ready for more challenging texts.* English and Language Arts curriculum standards have shifted to create a strong emphasis on exposing students to informational texts and non-fiction texts. Informational texts include literary non-fiction, historical documents, scientific journals, technical manuals, biographies, autobiographies, essays, speeches, and information displayed in charts graphs, or maps digitally or in print. We will explore many of these types of informational texts in Scholastic News magazine. Take a look at the wide range of English Language Arts skills that we'll focus on while reading Scholastic News : π―Main Idea and Key Details π―Compare and Contrast π―Authorβs Purpose π―Cite Text Evidence π―Determine Word Meaning π―Context Clues π―Parts of Speech π―Cause and Effect π―Make Inferences π―Problem and Solution π―Summarize Texts π―Text Features π―Vocabulary Acquisition π―Integrate Multimedia Our time together will be as follows: 5 minutes: Welcome and Community Building 5 minutes: Introduction to the Article for the Day; Vocabulary Study (slides, picture, short video clip, discussion) 20 minutes: Read the Article Together 15 minutes: Written Response to the Article; Summarize the Article; Game/Comprehension Sample lessons: π "The Coolest Inventions" Children will identify several Black inventors and explain how their inventions solved problems. Vocabulary: inventors, inventions, bristles Featured Skill: read a timeline Featured Strategy: read, stop, write π "Can a Dog Run a Town?" Children will examine what a mayor does by reading about an animal mayor. Vocabulary: mayor, election, votes, communities Featured Skill: read a map Featured Strategy: read/stop/think π "Monkey in the Snow" Children will examine how snow monkeys stay warm in the cold. Vocabulary: hot springs, groom, insulate Featured Skill: supporting responses to text with text evidence Featured Strategy: setting a purpose for reading π"Life Under the Water" Children will identify different aspects of life on a US Navy submarine. Vocabulary: veterans, submarines, Navy, mess Featured Skill: main idea and details Featured Strategy: using headings to guide our reading and summarize text π "Little Owls Big Trip" Children will follow the story of an owl that was rescued from the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. Vocabulary: rescue Featured Skill: read a chart Featured Strategy: chunking text ...and so many more! Join us for a new, engaging magazine article each week to learn about the amazing things happening in our world around us while we dive into non-fiction reading comprehension skills and strategies! *I have obtained permission from Scholastic to use Scholastic News in this Outschool class. πLeaves of Learning Academy is rated "Popular" by Outschool because we are in the top 10% of all teachers on Outschool. This means we offer classes that are in high demand that fill up quickly! π *Leaves of Learning Academy is an organization on Outschool with about 18 teachers. Occasionally, the teacher for this class may not be able to teach and a substitute teacher from the organization will take her place. Only teachers trained to teach this class will serve as a possible substitute for the class. A message will be posted in the Outschool classroom before the class takes place in the event a substitute will be teaching. I am happy to offer a refund to any learner who prefers not to attend the class with a substitute. Please send a message through Outschool in that event and I will issue a refund. Your teacher may, however, transfer your learner to another available section, or provide a class recording, at their discretion. β If your learner has not joined the meeting 10 minutes after the classβs start time, the meeting may be cancelled, at the teacherβs discretion. This is considered a missed meeting and you are not entitled to a refund. β Refunds are not guaranteed in the event that your learner misses a past or future class meeting due to a schedule conflict, and will depend on the class-specific refund policy. β If your learnerβs meeting time changes because of daylight saving time starting or ending for several world regions, you are not entitled to a refund if theyβre unable to attend. Please review your learnerβs schedule ahead of time to ensure you know when classes are meeting.
