The purpose of this book club is to gently introduce students to deep thought and conversation while having fun with fellow students and an epic adventure!
I'm a lifelong reader and self-professed bibliophile. My teaching style is classical in nature and literature based. I have been homeschooling my own children and teaching other homeschool students for nine years with Socratic seminars steeped in living books. I believe reading great books leads to producing great thinkers and writers who can better communicate their ideas. I have led many themed book club groups for children over the years. I've also taught English grammar until I started diagramming sentences in my sleep. But, I've found the most impactful English language study combines reading great books and studying great writing.
Students must have their own copy of each of The Chronicles of Narnia books by C.S. Lewis: 1. The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe 2. Prince Caspian 3. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader 4. The Silver Chair 5. The Horse and His Boy 6. The Magician's Nephew 7. The Last Battle
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Content Warning: The overarching theme of this series is Good versus Evil. Please be aware that there are depictions of battle scenes with violence, death, menacing creatures, slavery, the dark "underland", and sorcery across the various books in the series. If you have concerns for your reader, please preview these books and feel free to contact me with questions. In accordance with Outschool policy, all classroom discussion and teaching will be presented from a secular perspective.
