Beginner Contemporary Dance for Teens!
Summer Camp Lets Dance: Annie!
Class experience
The sun will come out TODAY! In this four day camp, students will get moving to four different songs from the musical Annie! Come with some dance experience or none at all; this camp is designed to get you dancing AND have fun! We will begin each class with a brief check in to see what kind of energy everyone is bringing with them, then a brief warm up to wake up our bodies and feel out the space, and then move on to learning a beginner dance combination set to about a minute of a song from...
By the end of our session, students will have a new knowledge of different types of dance steps used in traditional musical theater choreography, as well as how to piece together different portions of a combination. They will also develop their confidence in performing in front of others and using their body in a new athletic way. The final task of adding character or specific emotions to the dance helps them to give life to their movement and focus more on the storytelling than on getting every move perfect. Our discussion/debate period allows students to also communicate with others in their age group and become part of a community across the world. They might also learn a new song!
As a baby, preschool, and elementary theatre and music teacher, I have worked with students ages 5 months to 12 years in this format. I believe that moving our bodies is a great way to keep kids active and discover new ways to be creative, while challenging them to remember specific movements in a piece of music keeps their brains sharp. I'm so eager to bring this particular class option to students as it keeps us moving during these unusual times, and lets them develop a relationship with other students all over the world over eight weeks. This is a unique class in that students have the chance to perform Broadway style dance combinations from their living rooms eight weeks in a row!
Students should be in a space where they have room to move (seated with headphones is not advisable for this class!). Students should also wear sensible footwear (no open toe shoes or heels). Barefoot or socked feet are welcome! Please also have water, juice, lemonade, or some type of liquid nearby to stay hydrated throughout class (soda would not be the best choice to stay hydrated!). The following is OPTIONAL: If the student chooses, they may have costume pieces that are in the style of Annie to put on for our final performance in the last five minutes of class.

Hello! My name is Lauryn, and I can’t wait to learn with you! As a professional actor and musician, I believe we are the most well-rounded humans when we use the arts to learn more about communication, self-expression, and storytelling. I have had...
