Unlocking Subtext and Performance For actors and performers of all kinds who are ready to take their craft to the next level, this class provides a deep dive into scene study—helping performers break down scripts, uncover subtext, and bring characters to life with authenticity and nuance. Whether your learner is already auditioning for plays and film, just stepping into the world of acting, or looking to understand more about general performance and storytelling, this class equips them with the tools to understand story and character on a deeper level. True confidence and excitement in your learner's performance comes from their insight, empathy, and preparation, and that starts when they know why a character says what they say and does what they do. Scene study is more than just acting—it’s an exploration of human behavior, emotions, and relationships. Many students find this class intellectually stimulating, and just this week, one of our learners said it was “the most insightful class I’ve ever taken!” What Learners Will Do Each Week: ✔ Work with assigned scenes (memorization is optional but encouraged). ✔ Break down scripts to understand beats, motivations, and dynamics. ✔ Explore many different exercises, methods and "schools" of techniques. ✔ Uncover subtext and learn how to bring deeper meaning to their lines. ✔ Get on their feet to rehearse and perform with classmates. ✔ Take direction and explore different interpretations of the same scene. ✔ Sharpen their listening skills and make informed, spontaneous choices in performance. This class is interactive, engaging, and designed to build confidence in your performance at all levels. By the end, students will have a stronger understanding of text analysis and a sharper ability to adapt to direction—two key skills that set great actors apart!
Learning Goals
Tantamount to the craft of acting is studying the material and understanding the scene fully. These are my goals for your learner:
1) To build their confidence by equipping them with a mental toolset to manage scene preparation, performance and anxiety
2) To train them to be able to take apart a scene and find their own unique moments and beats
3) To teach them the difference between strong choices and weak choices
4) To show them how to be more introspective and get "in touch" with their feelings
5) To cast-off any concerns about embarrassing oneself
6) To provide them with a safe and encouraging space where they can try out their ideas and feel the reward of peer encouragement
7) To get them out of the chair and having fun!
Students will be expected to commit to their performance and get up and use the space they have when possible.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Sometimes scenes will contain dramatic conflict of a more serious nature dealing with heavier life challenges. This is a drama class. If there is any subject matter specifically off limits for your learner please let me know in advance. I make best efforts to make sure all material is diverse and inclusive and free of prejudice or hate speech. I expect the same from the students.
Supply List
Students will need to be able to print their scenes and be ready to make handwritten notes on them. Your student must also have a quiet space to move around in with good lighting in front of them (not behind!) so their fellow actor can see and hear them please.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
I provide all content directly within the classroom. Sometimes they will have to download scenes from a google drive link.

MEET ME: Gordon Woolvett
Hi, I’m Gordon Woolvett, founder of Boundless Reach. With over 250 plus screen credits in television, film and on stage—as a Gemini award-winning actor, writer, and director—I’ve seen how the right training can empower young performers to embrace their creativity, build confidence, and thrive.
You might recognize me from Andromeda (a sci-fi TV series sold in over 150 countries) or Bride of Chucky (which, let’s hope, your learner hasn’t seen!), but my passion extends far beyond the screen. With more than 45 years of professionally performing and training, I’ve developed tools for versatility and adaptability—exactly what your learner needs to overcome challenges, achieve greater success in acting, and unlock their inner artistry and creativity—all while laughing and having fun along the way.
As an improv performer (catch me live, weekly, at two different improv theatres in Vancouver, BC), a dad of three, and a soccer coach of 11 years: I’ve learned that creativity flourishes best in an environment that’s both structured and fun. That’s why our classes blend improvisation, scene study, and private coaching in joyful ways to help each student discover their unique voice and build the confidence to take on any challenge.
Gordon's Credit Highlights:
Many film & TV credits too numerous to list
Won a Gemini in 2002 (Canada's equivalent to the Oscars)
Was previously nominated in the '90s for Best Supporting Actor in a film
12 years of theatre and acting training
Written and directed numerous indy films and docs
Screewriter for indy film and prime time television
