Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi, my name is Kristen and I work full time as an American Sign Language high school teacher. I have experience teaching ASL to all ages as well as teaching Deaf children. I teach basic, intermediate, advanced, and topical ASL classes for all age groups. I also offer classes on different facets of Deaf Culture. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Deaf Education and am endorsed in Virginia to teach Deaf children of all ages and American Sign Language as a foreign language. I have been an ASL teacher in public high schools for 11 years, and have a passion for signing and teaching students about the Deaf community. My leveled classes will focus on the grammar and syntax of ASL and not just the signs, this way students come away with knowing how ASL and English are different, which is what makes ASL an actual language! Students also come away with linguistic knowledge and ability and not just vocabulary words.
I believe that students learn better when the content is tailored to their abilities and interests. My classes will be engaging, fun, and laid back. I believe that students need to be in a comfortable and safe environment, even online, to be able to feel safe sharing what they have learned and participating confidently.
In my personal life, I am a single mom to a boisterous 4 year old boy. I enjoy being outside, baking, reading, and spending time with my family. I love coffee and tea as well as reading and listening to true crime podcasts. I am looking forward to meeting your student and helping them learn sign language in the way that works best for them!
