Scales are so necessary for growing in your musical training on violin, viola or cello. Unless you have tools to make scales more fun and effective, they can also be deadly boring and even make you feel resentful about playing your instrument. This class will present some tools you can enjoy for the rest of your musical life. Less advanced players will work with a basic one-octave D Major scale. More advanced players can apply the techniques to more keys, additional octaves and faster tempos. These are techniques that professional string players use themselves to keep improving and enjoying their practice time.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to use rhythms and create their own finger patterns to apply to their scale practice. Over time, these techniques will allow them to feel more creative about their practicing and develop more flexibility in their playing.

Supply List
You, your violin, viola or cello and a piece of paper with pencil in case you want to take any notes. Please make sure your instrument is in tune before the class starts.

I'm a professional violist and composer who loves to collaborate. That means I like to share creating and learning with other people. I started a program called Composing Together so I could go into schools and libraries to work with groups of kids to create music together. I have toured internationally on 3 continents as a violist, been featured on Comcast Hometown and even have a gold record. You can hear my music online and on many recordings, too. But what I really love is making music together, and I am really good at helping other people find out how to make music that sounds like them. When we work together, I like to start by finding the rhythms inside the answer to, "What did you have for breakfast?" A breakfast menu is a great place to find musical inspiration. Once we have that, we're off!
I love to help people enjoy music better on their instruments, too. That means guiding them towards better technique, interpretation and developing good practice skills that they can use for a lifetime. Music is a language. It can say things words can't.
