What's included
1 live meeting
55 mins in-class hours per weekClass Experience
In this class, we will read and discuss (mostly) fiction books about dragons. The book for that week will need to be read before class, and you will have two weeks to read each book. Each class will start with teacher/learner introductions and chatting before moving into the book discussion. Each class will not build upon each other, so feel free to drop in/out any time, or stay only for the books you want to read! This is a smaller class that's designed for lots of learner interaction and engagement. Each meeting will be a discussion style class, facilitated by the teacher. We will discuss the book and our overall reading experience, as well as the characters, plot, themes, writing, world-building, and more. Learners will be encouraged to share their own opinions and feelings about the book in a respectful way, allowing others ample time to share too. I also encourage the learners to share one or more of their favorite quotes from the book. I primarily host classes about the middle grade fantasy series, Wings of Fire by Tui T. Sutherland. Now I want to give my learners a chance to read and discuss other books about dragons to see if they can find a new favorite book/series! Reading Schedule: Week of 10/18 - Dragon Kingdom of Wrenly (Book 1: The Coldfire Curse) by Jordan Quinn (Yes, you will need to read this one before the first class, but don't worry, it's a graphic novel!) Week of 11/1 - Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke Week of 11/29 - The Dragon Egg Princess by Ellen Oh Week of 12/6 - Legends of the Sky by Liz Flanagan (only one week to read this book due to scheduling) Week of 12/20 - How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell (Book 1 of the How to Train Your Dragon series) Week of 1/3/22 - Thrones and Bones: Frostborn by Lou Anders More dates/books will be added later. :) ***If we're reading the first book in a series, learners must agree to not spoil the other books in the series if they've read past book one.*** COPYRIGHT DISCLAIMER: None of the aforementioned books will be read in class, with the exception of a short quote or two. No copyrighted content will be included on printed materials or distributed to students. Sole ownership of these books remains with the authors and publishers. Please see my teacher profile for my personal class policies as a teacher.
Learning Goals
Learners will use their reading comprehension skills and will improve their understanding of how to participate properly in a group book discussion.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
I recommend that parents check into each book's content to see if it would be appropriate for their child. As a general disclaimer, some of these books have violent and/or scary scenes of action, danger, and adventure that might not be suitable for all young readers.
Supply List
Learners will need to access each listed book and have it read before class begins. All of these books can be found on Amazon for purchase, but I always recommend checking your local public library for them first. They're not necessary, but notetaking supplies while reading the books might be helpful.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
