People love to talk. We may not be as comfortable speaking in front of a crowd as we'd like, but one-on-one, we can usually talk without problems. When it comes to listening, the situation changes drastically. How many times have you been "listening" and walked away from the conversation without the slightest idea of what the other person just said? It may not always be feasible to ask, "What did you say?". Instead, why not build your listening muscles? Listening well is a skill that has application in every area of our lives. By improving this vital skill, your communication skills will develop at a rapid pace. This course provides opportunities for students to practice three core components of active listening: pausing/ wait time, paraphrasing and reflecting. There will be one assignment given before the first session. The assignment is to actively listen during three conversations before the class meeting. I will ask each student to review their cards and ask questions about what can be improved in future instances of active listening. Before too long, active listening will become second nature!
