Please contact the teacher if the learner has any questions about the work. 1) "Warm-up Activities" - Learners are expected to complete the warm-up activities. 2) "Lesson Practice" - Learners should complete every problem. The "Lesson Practice" covers the material from the "New Concepts". 3) "Mixed Practice" - Learners should complete every problem. Saxon scaffolds upon previous lessons, so completing all the problems is important. Learners or guardians should check the answers in the "Solutions Book". 4) "Tests" - Guardians should check the answers using the "Solutions book". 5) "Fact Quizzes" - Fact quizzes should be completed with each lesson. No more than one per day should be completed to ensure repetition for learning. 6) "Investigations" - These should be completed as intended. 7) "Topics" - These should be completed as intended. 8) "Supplemental" problems - These are found at the back of the big book for additional problems. They can be completed as needed for additional practice. These will not be reviewed unless a learner requests a specific question.Assessment
Progress will be evaluated during the lessons based on learner work. The teacher may contact the learner's guardians as needed. Guardians are welcome to contact the teacher as needed. Progress will be evaluated with the Saxon tests if requesting a grade. Minute fact tests should be completed without any assistance from calculators, parents, etc. Assigned Saxon tests should be completed without assistance from parents or other people. Calculators may or may not be used, and this will be stated by your teacher when the assessment is assigned.Certificate of Completion
Grades, Scoring: 1) I can assign grades if requested. The learner must complete and submit the tests from the Test Book to receive a grade for the semester. Please let the teacher know at the start of the semester if you are requesting a grade for the semester. 2) I do not grade homework. Learners are welcome to ask individual questions or post photos for homework review. It is not required to submit homework. 3) If the learner is not requesting a grade, submitting "Tests" is not required. 4) The "Solution Manual" contains the answers to the lesson homework and test answers.Class Experience
US Grade 6 - 7
Learners will complete the second half of Saxon Math 7/6 in this 16-week long semester course. This course will meet once a week. *Learners must have the required books to take this course. The materials are listed in the "Supply List" section. *The Test Book is required to receive a grade. Class and Learner Guidelines: ~Learners bring the student book to each class but do not need to bring the test book or solution manual. Please let your learner know before class begins if they are allowed to write directly in the textbook or not. Some people prefer to reuse the textbook. If learners will not be writing in the textbook, please ensure they are prepared with paper for class. ~We will use this whiteboard in class the majority of the time: https://whiteboard.fi/TeacherKate - you can access this any time to get yourself familiar with this feature. You can use this website to do your homework as needed as well. This website allows me to see all the learners' work. Please ensure your learner understands that the expectation of this course is that they will attempt each problem to the best of their ability. When not using whiteboard.fi, we will use the Zoom whiteboard as needed, so please help your learner understand where the annotate feature can be found. I encourage my learners to answer questions on the screen using the annotate feature and work together in class. I may also at times use my document camera. Learners may be requested to use the annotate feature at this time as well. ~Mute function - Please help your learner understand how to use the mute button. I encourage my learners to control their own mute button. They should stay on mute and unmute themselves when they would like to talk. ~Chatbox - Learners will also be encouraged to answer questions using the chatbox. Learners can type the answers into the chatbox if we are giving other learners time to think about the problems. If learners are able to spell, they may also then privately message me to let me know they are unsure of the topic. If there is a lot of background noise at the learner's location, the chatbox is a great tool. ~Class start time - I try to arrive and open class 5 minutes early. This allows learners to arrive early to check settings and chat with their friends in class before class begins. The class will begin on time. ~Camera/Video - I do not require the camera to be on the entire class time, however, I do need to see the learner at the start of each class. As the course goes on and I learn each learner's voice, verbal recognition is sufficient. However, with video off, if the learner is not replying, I do not know if they are confused or distracted. I prefer video on with all of my math courses. ~Recordings - Outschool automatically records all classes. I publish my math courses to be visible to learners so that they may review class time as needed. **However, I cannot publish the recordings if I show the book on the recording.** This allows my learners to review content as needed, without having to message me, then wait for it to be published. I do try to keep myself on "spotlight" so that learner video is not published in the recording. ~Environment - Class time is relatively relaxed. I try to keep the tone of the class light and fun. I use real-world examples, such as food and animals. Math is fun and can be funny, and I like my classes lively and interesting. I want my learners to feel comfortable asking me questions about the topic to ensure they do grasp the concepts. I do request learners to raise their hand to provide an answer to problems and questions. ~Teaching method/materials - I use manipulatives and physical objects whenever possible. I prefer to use a lot of colors to help with explanations. The majority of the class will be used with a whiteboard or with my document camera. I may also screen share websites at times. Before class: Learners are expected to watch teaching videos that I have created of the "New Concepts" and examples. This will not be covered in class. Class time: We will complete the "Lesson Practice" ("Practice Set") during class each week. Learners should come to class prepared with their student book and pencil. They should have paper if needed. At times, the class can be quite fast-paced. There is a lot of material to cover. Learners should contact me if they have any questions about the material. Homework: After each class, I will post a summary of what we did in class and the assigned homework. Homework expectations are listed below in the "Homework" section. A subscription to the math portion of ixl.com is included in this course. Class topics can be found in the table of contents found here: https://www.christianbook.com/saxon-math-76-fourth-ed-student/9781591413196/pd/793192 - I am not affiliated with this website nor am I suggesting it, I am only showing the table of contents. Extra help: I offer a homework drop-in class (for current semester learners) upon request, through this class link: https://outschool.com/classes/saxon-math-homework-drop-in-Q2uTCAma#ushxZxpxFU
