Class Experience

Santa isn’t in need of physical rescuing, but his reputation is about to be destroyed! Team up with some other kids on the “Nice” list, put your brains to work solving puzzles - Christmas Around the World trivia, a gift Guess Who?-style task, cryptofamily, and more - and help save Santa from scandal!

Here’s the scenario:
Santa's elves have been working hard all year long to get presents ready for every good boy and every good girl. Santa's checked his lists twice and is ready to go. And then... the internet goes out. His lists are all saved on the cloud! How is he going to deliver the right gifts to the right children??? This could be the biggest scandal in Claus history!

To help restore the internet, save Santa's credibility, and keep houses free of tears on Christmas morning, learners will need to solve Christmas-themed puzzles hidden in a digital escape room. All information and clues needed are hidden somewhere in the escape room, and I will provide hints if needed. Since the escape room runs through a Google Site, it works best if you are using Chrome.

During class, all students will be oriented to the task, open the presentation, and then be split into teams of no more than 4 to work in breakout rooms. This will allow students to contribute more meaningfully than working individually or in a large group. I will be going from room to room to check on students' progress and answer any questions they may have. To successfully collaborate, students should know how to go between open browser tabs, go between Zoom and the internet, and use Zoom features such as screen sharing and annotation (Note: Chromebooks do not offer the ability to annotate). If your child is not comfortable with these technology skills, please have an adult nearby to assist.

*A print out will be provided upon enrollment. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that your learner has this paper printed to use during the class.*

*This class has one puzzle that involves a good deal of reading. Your learner should be a proficient reader to get the most enjoyment out of this class.*

**One of the puzzles involves Christmas celebrations and Santa Claus traditions around the world. Many of these celebrations revolve around the Christian belief that Christmas celebrates Jesus's birth and the Epiphany which celebrated the visit of the three magi. Please be aware that your child will be reading information about these traditions.**

***While I will not be encouraging a discussion about the existence of Santa in this class, I recognize the topic may come up among the learners as they are working in their small groups. If you have concerns about your child discovering something that may take away from the magic of Christmas for them, please do not enroll your child.***

SIBLING DISCOUNT: Do you have more than one child that wants to participate? Message me after you enroll and I will refund you $3 for each extra learner.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Maryland Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Eighteen years as a public school teacher in Maryland and two years as an Outschool teacher have provided me the opportunity to teach learners from diverse backgrounds with a variety of learning styles. I began my teaching career in elementary school, teaching all subjects and earning my Masters of Education with a certificate in Gifted Education from Johns Hopkins University. Later, I added both Middle School Math: 6-9 and ESOL Pre-K-12 certifications to my professional certificate. Most recently, I taught middle school math, working with both accelerated students and those with Special Education needs. Because of my varied experiences, I have many strategies to help all kinds of learners.

Math is my passion because while there may only be one correct answer, there are often many different ways to solve the same problem. Exploring those different ways and finding a method of solving with which each learner feels most confident is what I love to do. I like to incorporate hands-on strategies, games, and interactive activities into my lessons to make math less scary for reluctant mathematicians and more engaging for everyone.

When I’m not thinking about math, I enjoy baking, cake decorating, drawing, working in my vegetable garden, and sewing. In my spare time, I can be found hiking, kayaking, bird watching, doing a puzzle, or assembling furniture. I look forward to meeting your learner!
