SAT Hot Words - Vocabulary Preview Class

This preview class gives teens a "try-it-out" for my 4 week course units covering typical vocabulary that is found on the SAT. I try to keep it fun while we learn definitions, contexts, forms, and see examples of how the words will be seen on the SAT test. The 4-week course units will use as a textbook, "Hot Words for the SAT", fifth edition, by Linda Carnevale.

Class Experience

Students will know the definitions, contexts, connotations and various forms of vocabulary words that are common to the SAT. Students will also be able to use the words correctly verbally and in writing.
In addition to a Masters in Education, I have a BA Degree in English and Psychology, a Georgia T-5 Teaching License in both English (6-12) and in ESOL (PK-12) plus 20+ years working in public and private schools.

Although I've taught advanced level courses, I especially enjoyed teaching remedial courses because those students progressed so well with my light-hearted, upbeat way of teaching.

Vocabulary teaching technique is a "soap box" topic for me because it bothers me to see it taught as definition lists. Words are MUCH more than their definitions! They have lives of their own, move in different ways, and are appropriate in some situations and not in others. They also must be used as the correct part of speech! Otherwise we get students writing "The lady wanted to elegant her dress for the prom." (That's the #1 problem I saw with students learning vocabulary from definition lists only.)
None for the preview class
Unit courses will include a pre-test and I will offer optional self-assessments for students to take outside of class.
30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
