***About Becky Zerr***
I have taught this novel for several years, and thoroughly enjoy helping students to understand the difficult concepts and satire within its pages.
Literature circles are a wonderfully engaging method for teaching literature, and it puts the students in the driver's seat, allowing them to take ownership of their learning under the supervision of an experienced teacher.

Hi there! I'm Monica and I teach reading, vocabulary, and writing classes. I recently finished graduate school in linguistics. I grew up speaking English, Spanish, and Swiss German at home, so I've been surrounded by several languages from a young age. Whether I am studying the history of a word, or what language can tell us about its speakers, I am endlessly curious about language. I have experience teaching linguistics courses at the university level, as well as teaching writing, reading, and English as a second language online. I'm so excited to share my passion for language and to learn with and from my students!
My teaching philosophy is that every student comes into the classroom with knowledge. It's my job, as a teacher, to leverage what they already know to help them achieve their goals.
Outside of the classroom, you can find me at the beach, or out in nature. I love to spend my free time reading, writing, and with my friends and family. Oh, and playing with my cat, Biscuit!
I'm looking forward to seeing you in class!

I am a certified preschool teacher and I have a 160-hour TEFL.  In the past 7 years I have worked with preschool age children all the way through high school. I have worked as a lead preschool teacher, substitute teacher for all grade levels and an educational therapy assistant working with students with severe needs.
I have also taught ESL online for 3 years and have been an online reading tutor for 1 year.
I enjoy family trips to the beach with my husband and two sons. I also enjoy reading, boating, and taking our two dogs to the dog park.
I look forward to learning about your child and helping them achieve their learning goals. See you in the classroom!

I teach English Language Arts with New Horizons Academy and stay home with my own four young kiddos. My kids (ages 10, 8, 6, and 3) keep me on my toes and help me to come up with new and fun lessons to bring into the classroom for your own little learners.
I love teaching children of all ages and am looking forward to becoming your child's teacher.
My personal teaching philosophy is "We are Lifelong Learners!" I want to foster a love of learning in my classroom through engaging, fun, and creative lessons.  I hope to see you in my classroom very soon!

Class #1 HW: Read Chs. 1-2 and complete your weekly role
Class #2 HW: Read Chs. 3-4 and complete your weekly role
Class #3 HW: Read Chs. 5-6 and complete your weekly role

Students will need to have a copy of Animal Farm by George Orwell. As it is a classic, it can usually be found at the local library or as an e-book. A public-domain version is also available at https://www.gutenberg.ca/ebooks/orwellg-animalfarm/orwellg-animalfarm-00-h.html.
The digital handouts are a forced-copy Google Doc, which is the equivalent to a photocopy. If you do not have a Google account, please message me and I would be happy to provide you with a PDF.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
  • Google Docs for the digital handouts and Vyond Cartoon Animation, Storybird, and Fakebook are digital options for the literary choice board at the end of the class
Grades will be provided upon request.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
From Common Sense Media:
"Parents need to know that Animal Farm is a biting satire of totalitarianism, written in the wake of World War II and published amid the rise of Soviet Russia. Although it tells a fairly simple story of barnyard animals trying to manage themselves after rebelling against their masters, the novel demonstrates how easily good intentions can be subverted into tyranny."
Educational Value: 5/5
Positive Messages: 3/5
Positive Role Models & Representations: 3/5
Violence: 3/5
Drinking, Drugs & Smoking: 3/5
