US Grade 9 - 11
This class focuses on preparing students to successfully answer multiple choice questions about highly-tested concepts on the SAT Writing and Language Section and/or the ACT English section. Day One: *comma usage (lists, introductory clauses, appositives, and FANBOYS to join two independent clauses) *semicolons *colons and dashes *concision Note: If needed, we will continue or review these skills at the beginning of class on day two. Day Two: *transition words *author's purpose *adding and deleting phrases or sentences During class, the teacher will screen share a slideshow. After receiving instruction about the skill, students will be given "think time" to answer questions and will be encouraged to share their responses and reasoning with the class when applicable. Disclaimer: Please note that the teacher will do her best to adapt to the students' existing knowledge. While students are likely familiar with some of the concepts of the class, students are not required to have any existing knowledge of these concepts prior to the class. In an effort to build students' confidence, we will start with the "easier" skills and work toward the more challenging concepts. Please note that this is not an essay writing or reading comprehension class. On the SAT, "writing and language" refers to the grammar section. This section, combined with the reading section, yields the student's English score. This class focuses on the highly-tested grammar skills students need to understand in preparation for the PSAT, SAT, ACT, and some MAP tests. If interested in an essay writing class, please reach out. I have other writing classes, and I would be happy to help you find a class that fits your needs.
