Sarah, Plain and Tall Book Discussion/Book Report Writing Class

In this 4-week course, students will immerse themselves in the 1800s. Each week, they will participate in engaging discussions, answer comprehension questions, and write summaries for each chapter. Students will then write a book report.

Mastery Evaluation
1 hour per week. Students will need to read the assigned chapters outside of class, summarize each chapter and be ready to discuss the book in the next class. Students will turn in a final copy of their book reports, and I will provide feedback.
Assessment
I will fill out a writing rubric offering feedback on the final book report.

In this dynamic 4-week course, students will immerse themselves in prairie life. Each week, they will participate in engaging discussions, answer thought-provoking comprehension questions, and write insightful summaries for each chapter. As we progress through the book, students will develop a detailed outline for their book report, integrating new ideas and perspectives. By the end of the course, they will transform their outlines and summaries into a polished book report, showcasing their writing skills. This course is designed to foster a love for reading while enhancing critical thinking and writing abilities.

Lesson 1:
Introduction to Book and Writing Chapter Summaries
 Students will come to class having read chapters 1 and 2 of Sarah, Plain and Tall. We will discuss how to write a chapter summary on a Post-It note as well as describe the main characters and the setting. Students will be outlining their book report throughout our sessions.

Lesson 2:
Discuss Chapters 3-4
 In this session, we will discuss chapters 3 and 4. Make sure you have written a Post-It note summary for each chapter and you have the comprehension questions answered for our class discussion.

Lesson 3:
Discuss Chapter 5-7
 Be ready to discuss your chapter summaries for chapters 5-7 as well as the comprehension questions.

Lesson 4:
Discuss Chapters 8-9
 Students will be talking about their summaries for chapters 8-9. We will also discuss book themes, plot and answer comprehension questions.

Pre-Requisites
Students should be able to write a 5-sentence paragraph for this course.
