Salt to the Sea, by Ruta Sepetys, a Book Club With Ms. KC
Class experience
This class will meet once a week for 8 weeks. During that time we will read and discuss the novel, Salt to the Sea, by Ruta Sepetys. This will be an integrated unit of study that involves reading, writing, examining history, and connecting past events to present day. Class sessions will be structured to include some shared reading, discussion, and in-depth study of literary techniques. Students will need to do some assigned reading on their own, outside of class, as well as journal...
Students will enjoy rich, meaningful literature, focused around an historical event, with underlying themes of social justice. Students will be able to identify strong literary writing techniques and apply them to their own writing. Students will gain a deeper understanding of the events that occurred during WWII, and how the events impacted the lives of those involved. Students will demonstrate their understanding of subject matter by creating a fictional character. Weekly journal entries will be written from that character's perspective, showing a deep level of understanding of what occurred during this time in history.
I have been teaching upper-elementary age students for over 20 years, and leading young adults in book clubs is my expertise. I've helped countless students develop a love of reading with my ability to choose meaningful, thought-provoking novels. The experiences I've gained in the classroom for years will enhance the authenticity of this meaningful book club.
Students will need their own copy of Salt to the Sea, by Ruta Sepetys, and a journal for writing.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Salt to the Sea is a powerful, emotional novel set during WWII, appropriate for mature students in grades 7 through 9. It will be helpful for students to have some prior understanding of the events leading up to WWII, as well as the ability to follow multiple main character story lines. Common Sense Media recommends this book for ages 13 and up. https://www.commonsensemedia.org/book-reviews/salt-to-the-sea
