"Salamat Po!" and Gestures of Respect in Filipino Culture
What's included
2 live meetings
50 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
In this 2-day class, learners will be introduced to the many different ways Filipinos show respect to their elders. This can be parents, grandparents, teachers, older brothers, sisters or cousins and even strangers. Tagalog vocabulary is peppered throughout the lessons to help build each learner's word bank, especially if they have been taking my other classes. In addition, lessons cover other cultural themes such as our national flower and the Philippine flag, among others. A presentation will be used during class to give them a visual as well as role playing to put into practice the ways we show respect. Learners are encouraged to either bring a favorite stuffed doll or have their grown-up nearby (but out of the camera view) to practice gestures of respect. Everyone has a chance to interact with me and others. I routinely call on each learner to give them a chance to shine. I always encourage the rest of the class to listen and watch the student on spotlight as they can all learn from each other. No prior knowledge is required. While this class is in English, we will be learning vocabulary words and phrases that the students can use in their daily life after this course. Below is the schedule and breakdown of lessons over the two days in two weeks: April 17 1) What is respect in Filipino culture like? 2) Saying "opo" to our elders 3) Showing mano to our elders and loved ones 4) Calling kuya/ate 5) Listening to parents 6) Listening in school April 24 1) Sharing 2) Waiting 3) Being helpful 4) Being kind 5) Saying "Salamat po" 6) Saying "Mahal kita"

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in History from De La Salle University
I was born, raised and educated in Manila, Philippines. While I have lived in the United States more than half of my life today, I am still very much fluent in the language and practice many of our traditions. I have been teaching several Tagalog language classes on the Outschool platform since 2020 including a history and culture course. I have also been teaching ESL to Chinese students for almost three years so I am very well versed in language acquisition online.
My own family today is still raised with Filipino beliefs, customs and traditions. I try to instill these values I grew up with so they themselves know their roots. It is my joy to share the unique culture of the Philippines to increase awareness and instill pride in my Filipino students here on Outschool.
