Culturally, many young men are taught that they must hide their feelings and their emotions. That they need to "man up!' This ongoing course is intended for young men to learn that it's okay for them to talk about their feelings and emotions, and they will practice doing this during each class. The teacher will provide content for the learners to see examples of certain emotions being shown by other men. We will talk and discuss the positives and negatives of how those emotions were expressed, what he could have done differently, what the learners would have done in a similar situation, how they think society wishes they would emote. Themes and Topics for our first four weeks: Week of May 31: Examples of Men Expressing Anger. Week of June 7: Examples of Men Expressing Sadness. Week of June 14: Examples of Men Expressing Fear. Week of June 21: Examples of Men Expressing Love. ***While the class title states that it is for young men, any learner is welcome to join us however they identify.
Learning Goals
Students will have the opportunity to learn communication skills, dialog with peers, and build self-confidence.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Students are invited to open up and share their thoughts, feelings, ideas, and emotions. Each child has their own life situation and circumstance, and sensitive topics may come up. For this reason, we will go over what it means to be in a Safe Space before opening the group up for discussion where we will talk about how to be productive in these conversations. I will not advise your student, rather facilitate discussion between peers and asking the students questions to prompt their own thinking and sharing.
Sources
We will use articles from BBC and videos from YouTube to show different types of emotion. This content will be screen shared with the learners.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, I'm James. I love learning, and more than that, I love inspiring others to love learning! I spend a short time at the beginning of each class to get to know each learner so that I can make each class as individual as the learners who attend. I value integrity and conduct my classes with that concept as my foundation. I have a laid back personality, and strive to provide a stress-free and judgment-free space for every learner. My classes are constructed around the concepts of higher order thinking skills, creative problem solving, and critical thinking.
You will notice that I teach classes in a variety of subjects. Just like young learners need variety, I too enjoy variety and appreciate having different experiences and types of learners to enrich my own life. This enrichment and excitement is something that I can express back to them. I only teach subjects in which I have both experience and education.
Regarding education and experience - I have a master's of education in teaching and learning, a graduate certificate in gifted education, a bachelor's degree in political science with a concentration in international relations and a minor in history, I'm a registered behavior technician and a disabled veteran. I've also spent time formally studying Philosophy and Psychology. I've worked as a substitute teacher, special education teacher, mentor, tutor, and behaviorist. I have experience coaching high school basketball, and leading track and field events for K-12 students.
