Rules is a humorous and heartwarming book about a little girl who just wants to live a typical life of a preteen. However, she has a brother who has autism and most of her family's life is centered around him and helping him learn the "rules" of life. In this course, we will be reading, discussing, and analyzing this story and the characters. Each student should read the required chapters before class, but we will also read some of the chapters together in class so we can stop and discuss different parts of the story together. Each student will be encouraged to interact in class during different activities related to our reading. I will also assign journal entries or assignments at the end of each class for homework, and we will share our completed assignments with each other each class. Students will also receive an assignment that they will work on during the entire four week course. We will use part of our last class together to discuss and share this project. Course Schedule: Week 1: Class 1: Ch. 1-3 Class 2: 4-6 Week 2: Class 1: Ch. 7-9 Class 2: 10-12 Week 3: Class 1: Ch. 13-15 Class 2: 16-18 Week 4: Class 1: Ch. 19-22 Class 2: Wrap-up *Last class may be shorter than 45 mins.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to better analyze and comprehend what they read. We will learn how to find evidence in our reading to support our answers. During our classes we will learn to discuss and and analyze characters in the stories. Students will learn how to express their thoughts and ideas about what they read. They will learn how to think in abstract ways instead of just in concrete terms. We will practice independent thinking and answering open ended questions with more than one answer.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! I've been married for 24 years and I'm a mother of two grown children. I was born in Ohio, but moved to Virginia when I was in 7th grade. I love animals and have several of my own! My dogs love to join me at the end of class to say goodbye to my students!
I have been in a classroom of some kind since 2004! I've taught students from preschool through 7th grade in all subjects! I've also been an online teacher for the last five years so I am very experienced in teaching online! My favorite areas to teach are Reading and Language Arts and Science. You'll find me teaching many fun classes where you get the opportunity to learn about different animals because I am a huge animal lover. I also love reading so look for different book studies, too. I was a preschool teacher for several years and love to lead my littles in songs and movement activities so you can find these classes as well! I love doing many different things, so check with me often for fun, interactive classes! You never know what I'll add, but you can be sure, whatever the class is, your child will have fun learning with me!
