Our AKA (also known as) book club is a look in the notable life of a person through the lens of a biography picture book. This is a one time class. Rube Goldberg was a brilliant cartoonist, a talented sculptor, and was also known as an inventor extraordinaire. If you've ever seen a Rube Goldberg machine in action, it's likely not something that you've forgotten! We'll learn more about how the idea of a Rube Goldberg machine came to be and how the term Rube Goldberg machine came to be a word in the dictionary. In this one time book club we will be discussing discussing the book "Just Like Rube Goldberg" by Sarah Aronson. Learners will need to pre-read or listen to this picture book before our meeting. This book will not be read aloud in class. Book Discussion Our class will start with a book discussion about the content of the book and what the learners found interesting about Rube Goldberg's life. Learners will be encouraged to participate, but not required. Vocabulary We will discuss the meaning of several vocabulary words and discuss how they are related to Rube Goldberg's life. Map Exploration A map will be shared with the learners so that we can see where Rube Goldberg was born and how far he traveled to live in New York. Timeline We will place Rube Goldberg's life on our timeline that includes general historical events. Activity We will discuss the makings of a Rube Goldberg machine and each learner will draw their own Rube Goldberg machine. Learners will be encouraged to share their machine design with the class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! I'm Mery, a homeschooling mom to two awesome kids and over the past 20+ years, I've taught many other learners through community classes. From a very young age I loved reading and people who knew young me at the time said that the one thing they could always count on when they saw me is that I would always have a book with me. As an adult, when I was reflecting I realized that these stories that I enjoyed when I was young taught me lasting knowledge that still impacted my life as an adult. I believe that stories and hands on experiences are the best at helping us learn, so in most of my classes you'll find that we are learning through fantastic stories and learning new skills that we try on our own. I still love to read today as an adult, but I find that most of my favorite books are still the children's/young adult books that I'm reading with my kids!
