RPG Adventures in Queerness: D&D Club for LGBTQ+ Learners

In this ongoing club, learners will create and play characters through which they will navigate a fantasy world: making friends, fighting monsters, and exploring who they are, both in and out of character.

Class Experience

Welcome to the Dungeons and Dragons multiverse, where anything is possible and where your choices actively change the world around you! RPGs are all about collaborative storytelling, and I am excited to see the story we make together! While the overarching story will carry over from week to week, players are welcome to join and leave at any time, as in any epic story, allies can appear or disappear at unexpected times. Our story, the story that we will create together, will involve fighting monsters, finding treasures, exploring ruins, meeting interesting people, uncovering evil plots, and becoming local heroes. It may even include becoming legendary heroes known throughout the world!

This will not be a class so much as a club, made for both brand-new and seasoned players of Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition. We will meet weekly to play within an original campaign setting, where together we will help new players become comfortable with the mechanics and gameplay, and at the same time, we will be fashioning a fantastical story. As this club is open to both new and old players, everyone will be patient and helpful with each other, as even 5th Edition, which is the most user-friendly Edition of D&D, can be a lot to take in at first, and newer players can benefit from the experience of more seasoned players.

The timeline and content of the different sessions will vary based on the students' desires and in-character decisions. Whenever a player joins the club, I will work with them one-on-one outside of meeting times via classroom messaging to create a character, including race, class, background, backstory, appearance, identity, and how to introduce them to the party. As this club is particularly for learners who identify as LGBTQ+, it is a safe space to explore both the learners' identities and their characters' identities. RPGs are a safe place to be whoever you are, whoever you want to be, and/or whoever you may be afraid to be.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Dungeons and Dragons involves themes of fantasy violence, including the use of weapons to fell enemies. The Dungeons and Dragons universe contains several pantheons of deities that may help or harm mortals. The deaths of player characters and/or non-player characters are a possibility in any game of Dungeons and Dragons. I do not intend on it happening, but just as in real life, accidents and tragedies can happen in the fantasy realm.
Supply List
I will provide character-creation materials. Learners will need their own dice, but there are plenty of good online dice rollers if learners do not have physical dice.
