US Grade 5 - 8
This weekly class is an English/Life Skills hybrid of sorts, as it develops the social skills of students while examining topics & themes normally seen in an ELA course, all within the realm of "Star Trek"! Each week, students will meet and I will moderate discussion based on a scene, episode, movie, character, ship, or culture from "Star Trek" (primarily the original series and "The Next Generation", but all iterations may be used). Students are encouraged to come to class with an open-ended "Trek" discussion question or observation, but it is by no means mandatory. Similarly, students do not need any prior experience with "Star Trek"...if this is their first venture into the property, even better! Discussion may range from "which ship is better, the Enterprise-D or E?" to "how does 'Star Trek 6' deal with aging heroes?" and everything in between. Good literature, art, music, and film/TV is timeless when it both entertains as well as makes us think--it can offer social commentary or examine the human condition--"Star Trek" does all of that in spades. Topics Week 1: Kirk Week 2: Star Trek in the 60s Week 3: Picard Week 4: The Enterprise

Parental Guidance
The class is meant to be lighthearted and fun--any discussion about social issues will be kept general and not necessarily about the issue itself, but about the fact that "Star Trek" was exploring a social issue through science fiction.
