US Grade 7 - 10
Food offers insight into the lives of people who lived in the past. It is also an essential element of culture. This class offers students a more in depth look into how food was grown, prepared, and what was eaten in medieval times. This one-time class will begin with tours of royal kitchens and medieval gardens using a slideshow format. This will be followed by: • Glimpses into the types of dishes that were eaten by: royalty, the merchant class, and the poor. • Discussions about herbs, spices, and common ingredients that were used by the people. Where these items could have been bought or how they were grown. • The class will conclude with demonstrations on how to make medieval recipes in a modern kitchen. These recipes will be seasonal based to best demonstrate what would have been available at the time. At the conclusion of the class, I will be supplying more recipes that students may try at home. This will give them the added joy of something tangible to show off what they have learned and a new skill.
Learning Goals
They will learn about the culinary side of medieval life and how to create medieval based recipes.
