'Romeo and Juliet' by William Shakespeare: Young Reader's Introductory Course

This five-week course provides an introduction to the great themes of Shakespeare's ever-popular play about the tragic passion of two young lovers. We will explore the remarkable transformation of Juliet from a submissive daughter to an independent young woman, the headstrong passion of Romeo that hastens his demise, the debate about how much the two tragic heroes were victims of fate, and much more. I have three university degrees in literature - that's why I get to call myself 'Doctor' Radice. I've also taught literature for more than thirteen years in schools, to classes ranging from age nine to eighteen.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
'Romeo and Juliet' contains some violent scenes of sword-fighting where Mercutio, Tybalt and Paris are killed, which may be disturbing for younger students. One of these (the scene where Romeo slays Paris) is the focus of the fifth lesson in this course. There is no grisly description, and a radio play will be used for the extract, so no blood will be seen by students.
