Class Experience

This five-week course provides an introduction to the great themes of Shakespeare's ever-popular play about the tragic passion of two young lovers. We will explore the remarkable transformation of Juliet from a submissive daughter to an independent young woman, the headstrong passion of Romeo that hastens his demise, the debate about how much the two tragic heroes were victims of fate, and much more.

Students will have plenty of opportunities to discuss these ideas orally and to practice applying them in writing activities, which will always be closely guided to ensure success. Students will also learn the prologue to the play, using a straightforward method that enables anyone to master poetry by heart.

The schedule for the course is as follows:

Lesson 1: Overview of Act One and detailed focus on Romeo's fatalistic attitude in Act One Scene Four.
Lesson 2: Overview of Act Two and detailed focus on Juliet's passionate individualism in Act Two Scene Two.
Lesson 3: Overview of Act Three and detailed focus on Romeo's total devotion to love in Act Three Scene Three.
Lesson 4: Overview of Act Four and detailed focus on Juliet’s courage and determination in Act Four Scene Three.
Lesson 5: Overview of Act Five and detailed focus on Romeo’s religion of love in Act Five Scene Three.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
'Romeo and Juliet' contains some violent scenes of sword-fighting where Mercutio, Tybalt and Paris are killed, which may be disturbing for younger students. One of these (the scene where Romeo slays Paris) is the focus of the fifth lesson in this course. There is no grisly description, and a radio play will be used for the extract, so no blood will be seen by students.
Supply List
I will provide a study guide with quiz questions and a textbook for the guiding writing activities. Other than that, students just need to bring paper and pen or pencil.
