See also my related world literature courses. Romanticism is a literary, artistic, and philosophical movement of the 19th century exploring what it means to be human--human emotion, and the individual. This course will explore the origins and results of this movement that developed in reaction to the Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution. In class, we will explore the origins and concerns of this movement by looking at primary documents. Each week we will explore the art, music, and literature of Romanticism to investigate the major themes, styles, and concerns of this time period. We will look at artists such as Delcroix, Goya, Byron, Shelley, Keats, and Chopin, among others. Students will build textual, visual, and musical analysis skills through this exploration and discussion. Optional writing assignments will be provided each week for students who want individualized feeback. Week 1--What is Romanticism?
