Class Experience

This specific course is geared toward higher level thinking. Each literature circle role is directly connected to the 11 elements of critical thinking: big ideas, rules, trends, patterns, language of the discipline, ethics, relationships over time, details, unanswered questions, across disciplines and multiple perspectives. Students will also get practice at "presenting" in a casual context as well as asking questions and holding a discussion, taking turns and perspectives. Students will rotate through the following roles each week: Discussion Director, Connector, Vocabulary Enricher, Literary Luminary, Investigator, Plot Profiler and Illustrator.

Week 1: Prologue - Chapter 2

Week 2: Chapter 3 - 6

Week 3: Chapter 7 - 10

Week 4: Chapter 11 - 14

Week 5: Chapter 15 - 18

Week 6: Chapter 19 - Epilogue
The students will read approximately 30 pages per week and complete their "job" in order to be ready to present to the group each week.

In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Please note that this book deals with the discussion of physical and mental disability. Some learners who are particularly sensitive to this content may require parental support and conversation to best process their feelings and responses. Overall, this book is empowering and encouraging, but discussions of schools/institutions/individuals and groups and their biases (especially prior to the disability rights legislation of the 1960's and 70's) may be upsetting to some.

The instructor will provide students with a PDF and/or a Google Slides version of the documents needed.
