Roll the Dice! Weekly Short Story Creative Writing Club for Teens
What's included

55 mins in-class hours per weekClass Experience
US Grade 8 - 10
Write a new story every week! Each week we will roll the story cubes and use the results to guide the day's short story. We will record the dice results and individually plan our characters, setting, plot, conflict, and resolution on the provided template during the first few minutes of the class. Next, students will poll on whether to write or use oral storytelling for the session. If it is a writing choice, everyone will be given the option to share their stories at the end of the session. We will write or tell our stories using the template as a guide, finishing them within the 50-minute time limit. Students will be encouraged to interact and brainstorm with each other as they need. Proper critic etiquette will be reviewed before each sharing session, and encouragement and praise of peer efforts will be promoted in every session. Learners will participate in giving and receiving constructive feedback from their peers in the last three sessions. They will learn how to "sandwich" their feedback. They will come to understand the great value peer feedback can provide to the writing process. They may also ask and converse with the teacher during each session. There are no weekly session topics because each week, students will write a new short story based on the rolling of the story cubes. Our goal is to complete a different short story from start to finish within class time each meeting. We will not learn writing strategies, only outlining the 5 elements of the story and making up a story to share, writing a new story each day. Students should have a basic grasp on the 5 elements and skills of creating a story from start to finish as our goal is not "learning to write" but "strengthening our writing" through practice. We hope to gain more creativity, brainstorming, planning, using time efficiently, and writing skills each session, strengthening with more practice. Since this is an ongoing club, feel free to enroll and unenroll as needed!
