Writing helps children develop cognitive skills and organizational abilities. It helps develop creativity, self expression, self confidence, and communication skills! Writing helps with a bunch of things! But, what if you have a reluctant writer? This class will use games to get those creative juices flowing and help to get ideas to paper.
In the first class, we will begin with introductions. Then, we will play a group version of Mad Libs to make our own silly story. In class we will discuss how stories need a beginning/middle/end, characters, setting, and usually a problem that needs resolving! A short story will be read aloud showing these elements. We will then start playing "role a story" with dice. I will roll the dice (or if your student wants to roll their own, that's fine too). Whatever number comes up on dice, will give the writer a character, a setting and a problem. For example, your writer may be given- Character- A grumpy bear, Setting- In a hot desert, and Problem- found an unlucky penny. We will work on a few of these in class, making up some stories. At the end of class, I will let students roll for a character, setting, and problem. They will work on developing a story over the next week as homework.
In the second class, stories/illstrations will be shared. There will be another game of Mad Libs, and we will create another story as a class.
