In this R-Controlled Vowels workshop, we’re going to dive into the world of r-controlled vowels (-ar, -er, -ir, -or, and -ur) in a way that’s interactive, exciting, and full of fun! Each class will focus on one r-controlled vowel sound, where we’ll kick things off by introducing the sound with an exciting song or video to capture attention and engage our visual learners. From there, we’ll practice together, explore new words, and read passages that bring the sounds to life. The class structure will go as follows: 1) Exciting Introduction: We’ll kick off with an enthusiastic introduction to the r-controlled vowel of the day. 2) Fun Song or Video: To make the vowel sound stick, we’ll watch a fun video or sing a catchy song that reinforces the lesson and engages all types of learners. 3) Interactive Practice: We’ll practice together using interactive slides and activities, making sure everyone feels confident with the new vowel sound. 4) Reading Passages: We’ll read passages that include the r-controlled vowels, practicing fluency while having fun with the text. 5) Creative Sentence Building: Students will create their own sentences using the words they've learned, giving them a chance to be creative and reinforce the lesson. 6) Review and Reinforcement: We’ll wrap up with additional practice, review what we’ve learned, and celebrate the progress we’ve made! Pre-Requisites
This course is for students who have mastered CVC words, short vowels, and blends/digraphs, and are ready for the next level. Students should be able to blend sounds and decode simple words to succeed with R-controlled vowels.

I plan to incorporate some fiction books or short stories during this week of learning that includes a variety of engaging, age-appropriate, and reading-level-appropriate options. I will ask the students to choose which book they'd like to read from a set of options. This ensures that they feel involved in the learning process, while allowing them to explore stories that spark their interest. Options will be curated to include a mix of narrative and phonics-based texts that focus on fluency and word recognition.
These resources will not only support the learning of R-controlled vowels but also provide students with a broad and engaging approach to reading fluency, while aligning with best practices in phonics instruction.
