Robotics: Crack the EV3 Mindstorms Code! for Future Roboticists (Level One)
In this 4-week STEM course, students, ages 10-14, will learn the basics of coding & robotics using the EV3 robotics platform and discover the role of robotics engineers and how they impact our everyday lives. Required but NOT included: Lego Mindstorms EV3 (retired)
What's included
4 live meetings
4 in-class hoursHomework
1 hour per week. Students will be allowed to continue to build and program their robots in between meetings. Before every class, students can present their projects and the improvements they made in the process.Class Experience
Each session is full of projects based on Passion, Collaboration with Peers, and a Playful Spirit. It is full of hands-on Memorable, Meaningful, and Motivating activities, specially designed for girls and boys, 10-14 years old. This class is a discovery class where the only requirement is a passion for learning and creating. In this online live course, each student will: - Participate in a class with other children his/her age group (10 - 14) who own an EV3 set at home, discovering how robotics engineering is a part of their everyday life. - Enjoy four hours of personalized project-based instruction and interest-based projects. - Learn to design, build, create models that will require an engineer's eye using a robotics platform designed for children. - Collaborate with small groups (6 students maximum per session) with one adult certified live instructor. Syllabus/Topics covered: Week 1 (Intro to Robotics Platform) - Robotics - Hardware: Put your robot together - Software: Control the robot to make sounds/ show colorful lights Week 2 (Robots & Coding Platform ) - Robots - Coding: Program your robot to turn - Robotics Challenge: Ready, Set, Robots! Week Day 3 (Robotics Engineering ) - Engineering Design Process - Coding: Program your robot to move straight - Robotics Challenge: Ready, Set, Race Track! Week Day4 (Wrap up) - Problem Solving Strategies - Coding: Program your robot to combine behaviors - Robotics Challenge: Ready, Set, Maze! The 60 minutes classes are incredibly interactive: 15-minute lecture using videos and slides. 35-minute self-paced creation. 10-minute discussion of achievements.
Learning Goals
Robotics is a growing field in our world that is constantly changing and advancing in technology.
In this course, you will get to experience first hand what it is like to be a Robotics Engineer. You will have the opportunity to build and program your own robot through various obstacles and challenges presented throughout the class.
For this course, students will be programming and building the EV3 from Lego Mindstorms. Students will be using it to learn to program robots, create their projects, and share their creations.
Students will learn that being a Robotics Engineer starts with understanding a robot's parts and building and programming several simple tasks.
With the instructor's guide, students will learn that they, too, can be a part of the Robotics Engineer process if they are willing to try.
