There is no robot required for this class! We will be coding a virtual robot. Students may join this class at any time as material presented in non sequential. In this weekly class, students will learn to code a virtual robot without the need for a physical robot. Each week presents a new challenge where beginners and experienced coders alike will take on the challenge of programming a robot to perform a series or tasks that will accomplish a preset goal. Weekly challenges include: Week#1 - Robot Vacuum Challenge: How do robot vacuums work? Code a virtual robot to sweep the floor. Week#2 - Disk Mover Challenge Week#3 - Castle Crasher Challenge Week#4 - Coral Reef Cleanup Challenge Each class will begin with introductions. Students will share their preferred name and their location on the globe. The teacher will then proceed to explain the day's challenge and will show students how to code a basic algorithm that will get the job done in the least effective way. Students will then need to figure out how to refactor the code to make it more efficient. At the end of class, students will share their strategies and how they made their code more efficient and share their screen so that the rest of the class can provide feedback. This class will not only teach students programming, robotics, but also teamwork and social skills. I will teach students how to provide feedback in a way that efficient and productive. Experience required: All students must have prior experience on Scratch or other block coding environment (not necessarily Vex). Students who do not have any prior coding experience will struggle to keep up.
Learning Goals
At the end of each class, students will know hoe to:
-Work in teams.
-Give productive feedback.
-Program a robot.
