Class Experience

Beginner - Intermediate Level
You might know Roblox as a gaming site but it is also an incredible platform for creating and sharing online games. It is a great place for anyone to experiment with world and game building. It incorporates design and coding in a fun and playful way, and is completely free.

This class has NO LIVE MEETINGS and has a flexible schedule; this allows students to work at any time but students are expected to complete each lesson within a week. The lesson will be posted with supporting lesson videos. The lesson will be posted as a PDF document along with supporting videos. It will include directions for tool use, and screenshot photos to illustrate each step. Navigation tips and bonus projects will also be included. Participation, especially response to discussion questions, is expected.

No previous knowledge of Roblox or game-building is required. Students are expected to explore Roblox Studio in their own time and use the discussion board to ask questions and collaborate with classmates. Our projects include building an obstacle course and a racing game.

The teacher can always be contacted through the classroom page. Students are expected to post any questions, difficulties, or projects in the classroom page; the more questions the better! Over the course of four lessons, students will learn Roblox tools as they build their games. There are no graded assignments but students may share their games with the class and/or submit it for a grade if they like.

Syllabus

4 Lessons
over 4 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Obby Game - Roblox Studio basics
This lesson teaches how to start new projects, navigate, add parts, duplicate parts, and transform shapes. It also teaches how to add levels, checkpoints, jumps, slides, and velocity! You will use these skills to start building an obby game.
Lesson 2:
Obby Game - Coding in Roblox
This lesson teaches the basics of coding and how scripts work in Roblox. You will learn to write scripts to make interesting obstacles in your obby game.
Lesson 3:
Racing Game - Building a Racecourse
This lesson starts a new game - a racing game. You will learn how to model a racetrack. As you build the track, you will use many tools used in the obby project. You will also learn how to use models from the Toolbox and how to align parts. You will also script a start light to get the race started.
Lesson 4:
Racing Game - Coding in Roblox
This lesson continues and finishes your racing game. First, you will create a barrier at the start line to keep players from starting the race until the light turns green. You will also learn how to create a button that respawns all of the race cars and sends them back to the start line for another race.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Roblox is a sharing platform and I encourage students to share their Roblox account with their classmates so they can try each other's games. There are millions of users on Roblox everyday, and there are parental controls that you can use. However, it is not possible to prevent your child from friending a stranger. Please make sure your student knows how to use the internet safely and respectfully before starting this course. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Your child's safety is my top priority.
Supply List
Students will need to download Roblox studio which will be used to create our games. A tablet or Chromebook can not be used, unfortunately. Roblox Studio can be downloaded here: https://www.roblox.com/create

A three-button mouse is recommended.

Students will also need to create a Roblox account if they don't already have one. We will use this account for the entire course. Make sure you connect your account to an email just in case you lose the password. If you forget the password and don't have an email connected then you cannot recover the account and you will lose all projects.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I used to teach after-school programs in Roblox, 3D-modeling, and coding. I love teaching technology courses on Outschool because it allows for more personalized and in-depth curriculum. My curriculum is precise and direct but I am patient and easy-going. Game-building is a creative process that requires trial and error, and my goal is to help your student experiment fearlessly.
