Class Experience

There is a small supply list for this class!

My teaching style is to teach the subject/topic, and allow students to share what they know; I also ask questions to elicit knowledge, understanding and/or deeper meanings; or if the student needs the information in a different way to grasp the material.

Learners will learn details about the size, grandier and safety measures of the "Biggest Ship in the World." This will be done with facts, and visual aids. Learners will also learn about the crew and passengers and will be given an actual passenger to be throughout the lesson - they will know what class the passenger was on the ship, where on the trip they boarded, age, and gender. Learners will then work through a timeline of events and discover 12 things that went wrong; or chain of events that led to the disaster of sinking the unsinkable Titanic. Learners will have a chance to play a memory game, write a newspaper article about the tragic events and test their knowledge with a quiz!

Learning Goals

Ship details - *BONUS* If your child has 20 minutes extra at the end of the class, they can stay and watch and amazing surprise about the ship!

Parental Guidance
The learner is assigned a real Titanic passenger (at random) at the beginning of the lesson, they are told the name, gender, age, and travel route... At the end of the lesson they are told if they survived the sinking of the Titanic or not. If parents prefer their learner not be subjected to this part of the activity, please let me know ahead of time and I will have the learner exit the class before I reveal to the rest of the learners.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have taught this lesson to classes that had learners 5 to 11. I am aware that it contains the subject of death, facing life and death decisions, and possible discussion of 1 life seeming to matter more than another. I do not focus on these subjects, I prefer to focus on the events and timeline. I do approach any questions with respect and sensitivity and will let parents know if there are any comments or questions I think they should know about! History is full of tragedies, and I am willing to walk through these stories with kids, respectfully and lightly!
