We explore the wide variety of techniques in contemporary dance and styles vary - for example, classes may also include ballet, lyrical, modern, funk, etc. The choreographed routines we learn may take the form of a personal narrative, an allegory, a commentary on society, or an integration of many dance techniques. Each 55 min Contemporary Class Includes: 15 min warm-up 10 min technique / across-the-floor work 25 min contemporary combination. 5 min cool down + discussion Fresh choreography each time we meet, so new students can join on a rolling basis! Other Details
Parental Guidance
We can't wait to see your dancer online soon! Just a few logistics to help you feel more prepared (& excited) for a fulfilling virtual dance experience with us...
HOW TO SET UP YOUR PHYSICAL SPACE:
Find a space in your house that is quiet and uncluttered - preferably an "open" space with no obstructions and room to dance. For contemporary dance, hard wood floors are best, but we can also make a carpeted space work.
Add some sparkle to your space (optional, but makes class even more awesome!) - deck out your space with positive messages & personality just like we do at ADTC! You can create posters w/ a favorite quote or inspirational design, add flowers, balloons, etc. Get parents' permission first & camp rules apply - no glue or paint on walls!
CREATING A SAFE EMOTIONAL SPACE:
Here's how we foster an uplifting and positive environment during class:
1. No put-downs (to yourself or anyone else)
2. No negative body language (rolling eyes, etc.)
AUDIO/VISUAL SET UP:
Grab your laptop or mobile device and power plug. Prop your laptop/mobile device up on a chair or stacked books so you can view it well. Alternatively, if you have a projector and screen or way to connect your laptop to a TV screen, you can project the class up there.
Turn up the volume. Use your headphones if you prefer (just note that earbuds may fall out during class or get in the way). Adjust the lighting in your space as needed.
INTERACTING WITH YOUR VIRTUAL CLASSROOM:
Log into the Zoom Waiting Room at least 5 minutes before class so you may resolve any technical issues. If it is your first time using Zoom, login at least 15 minutes prior.
Use the dancer name you used to register so that we know who you are! Say "hi" when you arrive via chat or your mic if audio is on. We'll mute you while dance class is in session, so send us a chat if you have an issue hearing or seeing us.
After class, we'll unmute everyone so we can make new friends, answer questions and get feedback about how class went. When you're ready to head out after class concludes, just end the meeting.
Supply List
For contemporary dance, we recommend traditional jazz shoes, lyrical half-soles, or dance paws/foot undeez. If safe in your space, dancers can also be barefoot or wear socks (or half-socks).
