Class Experience

Welcome to Viking Village!

Investigate Viking history questions through a 360° virtual experience! This class is more of an introduction to the way that Viking and early European worlds collided, and focuses on debates on how Western Europeans viewed the Viking Age. Learners will work in teams, as they use primary and secondary sources to help solve a series of puzzles, complete writing prompts, and answer trivia questions based on Viking life! Teams will work to determine, based on the evidence: "Were the Vikings really so bloodthirsty, or were they survivalists?" Each activity will unlock coins and/or vital goods to ensure their team's survival in the winter!

The course will start with part of the historical documentary, "Fury From The North." This will provide background, and context for learners as they begin their historical investigation. All learners will be provided with a Viking Village course pack with all required reading material and handouts to complete their group tasks. Therefore, no previous knowledge is required for this class. However, pre-reading the articles in the course pack is recommended!

Each escape room challenge will help students learn more about everyday life in a Viking village, especially into terms of trade, shipbuilding, and cultural advancements, and provide more clues for context. These escape room activities will include:

Puzzle 1: Viking Trivia Based on Documentary Excerpt
Puzzle 2:Hidden Message Jigsaw Puzzle
Puzzle 3:A Virtual Quiz: "What was so special about Viking ships?"
Puzzle 4: Map Work - Teams will Color and Label using a key and map
Puzzle 5: “To Do List” for Vikings during the winter months
Puzzle 6:The Short History of Rune Stones Virtual Activity
Puzzle 7:Decoding a hidden message using Futhark, the Viking alphabet

The escape room will end with teams completing a short "Viking Quest" simulation and worksheet. This worksheet will include short answer questions and outlines for each team to design their own Viking shield and longboats! In the end, all teams will submit their final conclusions regarding the historical debates concerning Viking raids: "Were the Vikings really bloodthirsty or were they survivalists?" using evidence from the primary and secondary sources provided during the escape room.

The game does not have any graphic or scary elements. COPPA Policy for Thinklink and Youtube: There are video clips embedded in the Google Forms Quiz from Youtube. Safety and privacy are our top priorities. Learners under 13 will need to have Parental Consent when accessing those links on Youtube to comply with COPPA. Students will be provided with a direct code to access the game link, and will bypass any registration or sign-ins for Thinklink as I have a Professional Teacher License through the service to use the platform as a teaching tool. Therefore, learners will not need to provide any information or sign up for the platform themselves. In fact, students will be provided with a link that restricts them from having to share any personal information or sign in, as the game will appear on their screen without an interface. However, parental consent will be required to comply with COPPA. As per the terms of usage, all students accessing the Service are subject to consent provided via their educator or educational institution, as allowed under COPPA, and will require the use of a unique invitation code supplied by their instructor or education institution in order to create an account or access the platform.
