Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Beginner - Intermediate Level
This student centered class will focus on students' free writing after being given a prompt to free their creative thinking. Each week will be a different type of prompt. After a short discussion of the prompt, students will be given 5-10 minutes to write a response to that prompt. We will then discuss their writing, pulling out the "gems" that will stand out from their writing. Then, depending on how much time, students will write further on those gems-- perhaps a poem or a short story. Following is a list of possible prompts for each week.
Week One: -- color-- free write about colors/emotions/memories
Week Two: -- Music-- free write to selected pieces of musich
Week Three: -- Change your point of view- write about situations from various points of view
Week Four: - pictures- free write stories/poems to a variety of pictures
Week Five: -- story starters-- write stories from selected first lines of stories
Week Six: Oct. -five senses- use the 5 senses to write descriptions
Week Seven -- Making unusual connections- tying unusual objects together to see them in a new light
Week Eight: Nov. 10 -- lists -- make lists of emotions/places/people/historical events
Week Nine : -- similes/metaphors- use figurative language to find new ways of describing
Week Ten: -- what's inside-- rree write whatever is on student's mind
Week Eleven: -- Questions- ask and write about "I wonder" questions
Week Twelve: -- Favorite words - use favorite words to create a story or poem or essay
Learning Goals
Students will improve their ability to write to a prompt, free up their creative thinking, and identify the "gems" that will show up in their free writing. From there, they are welcome to write longer pieces of writing.
