🌟 The class fosters a love for languages, in this case the English language. Through games and collaborative writing, the students will improve their spelling and ability to write creatively. At the start of every class, we will recite dynamic verses and poetry which we, with the help of a bouncing ball, will link to rhythms and movements found in language. From there, we move to a memory game and then create sentences with rhyming words… the funnier the better! ✍️ Students will take turns to solve riddles and identify metaphors. As budding poets, they will work together to create rhyming riddles. ✍️ We will also cover homonyms – words which are spelled or pronounced the same but have different meanings. For example: a mouse is both an animal and a computer accessory. We will have fun sessions using homonyms to write sentences or even a short story. ✍️ Students will be introduced to “concrete poems”. They will create their own poems where the layout of the words is representative of the concept behind the poem. 📅 Day 1: Rhyming word pairs with different spellings Day 2: Rhyming word pairs with different spellings Day 3: Riddles: Solving and writing your own Day 4: Writing a “concrete poem” Day 5: Homonyms (multiple meaning words) Day 6: Tongue twisters & more riddles ⏰ SCHEDULING: Please check all the meeting times before enrolling. 🌍 MS. KARIN
I was born in Toronto, Canada into a Colombian-Armenian family. Multiculturalism is part of me. I speak English, Spanish, French and Armenian. I have lived in nine countries. For the last ten years, I have taught children in a variety of contexts, namely: a bilingual international school (Bogota, Colombia), a pioneer Waldorf school (Lake Atitlan, Guatemala), a homeschooling collective (Corsica, France) and online (with China). I graduated with an Honours BSc degree in Medical & Environmental Sciences from Queen's University, Canada. I have a Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults and Young Learners (CELTA-YL). I am a certified Waldorf teacher for grades 1 to 8. In addition, I am a Tai Chi practitioner, a Pilates instructor and I love to dance. I like exploring different forms of artistic expression including watercolour painting, poetry, theater, photography, Blender 3D and Photoshop. I believe in the importance of encouraging children to develop their creativity through a variety of art mediums.
My goal with each course will be to awaken the students’ curiosity. Through interdisciplinary learning, I show students the connections between multiple subjects in order to widen their perspectives and allow them to develop a deeper understanding. The class material comes alive with storytelling which is sometimes based on personal experiences from faraway places, be it in India, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, East Timor, Bali, Peru or California.
