Before there were ever any books, magazines, blog sites, or - dare I say it - TikTok, there was spoken word. Poetry is one of humanities oldest art forms, and it was used not only to entertain, but to educate and communicate secrets, traditions, and more across generations and centuries of people around the world. Today, poetry comes in many forms, and it serves many purposes, but the one thing that ties them all together is that anyone can be a poet and express their deepest feelings...
Students will improve their knowledge and skills of poetry reading and writing. They will also develop confidence and explore their creativity through their own writing.
I am a published author of poetry and short fiction, a performer on several virtual poetry reading groups, and a learner of poetry for many years now. My work ranges from love to friendship to social commentary to mental illness awareness and more.
Students should come to class prepared with any pieces they would like to share or work on; however, there will not be formal homework as creative writing is not a writing form that can be forced.
Paper and writing utensil Any poems students wish to share with the group either self-written or found through research
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
This course is participation based and will be informally assessed based on discussions and any pieces they choose to perform of their own. Students are not required to read their poetry publicly, but they will be guaranteed fair assessment of any work they choose to submit.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
No graphic images or wording will be included in any discussion pieces. While the students are allowed to write on a subject of their choosing, they are asked to refrain from using profanity, vulgar imagery or other mature content in their pieces if they choose to perform them during open mic. That being said, students will not be censored from tackling serious issues in their work, so please bear that in mind.
We will refer to several published pieces of poetry throughout the course. These will all be provided to the students at the beginning of class.
