Class Experience

In this interactive class we will use direct instruction and collaborative learning to review and master operations with integers. This class is most beneficial for students who have already been introduced to operations (adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing) with integers (negative numbers, zero, and positive numbers). We will be creating a foldable for students to use as a resource all year long.

Session 1 - We will discuss class expectations, how to use the platform, and ensure we have all of our supplies (printer/notebook paper, writing utensil, scissors). Content for this session includes creating our foldable, breaking down an expression to identify individual integers (ex: -2x + 5 - 6), and implementing our first strategy: how to add/subtract integers with the same signs (ex: positive 3x + 5x or negative -3 - 5).

Session 2 - A warm-up will be given to review adding integers with the same sign. Content for this session moves into our second strategy: how to add/subtract integers with different signs (ex: -3 + 4). Lots of examples will be used to help students build confidence with the first two strategies before moving into the third strategy.

Session 3 - The third strategy is used for multiplying and dividing integers (ex: -3 x -5). This lesson will conclude with a 5 question assessment where students will have the opportunity to demonstrate their level of mastery!

If we have extra time, students will complete a series of questions where they identify incorrect problems and correct them.

Learning Goals

Number and operations. The student applies mathematical process standards to represent addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division while solving problems and justifying solutions. The student is expected to: (D) add, subtract, multiply, and divide integers fluently (TEKS 6.3D)

Supply List
We will be creating a one-page foldable for note-taking purposes. Please provide one sheet of regular printer paper (notebook paper works, too), scissors, and a writing utensil (multiple colors are optional). This will be a resource students can use all year long!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Texas Teaching Certificate in Mathematics
The courses I offer center around core math topics in pre-algebra and algebra. I like to focus on the important building blocks students need to master in middle school and early high school in order to succeed in high school and beyond. Some of these topics cover proportionality, equations, inequalities, basic geometry, algebraic expressions, and arithmetic.

I am a certified teacher for grades 4-8 math and have over four years of professional experience teaching math to students ranging from grades 3 to 12. I taught seventh grade math while getting my credentials and taught my first year of seventh grade math at an amazing school. Though I left full-time teaching when I became a mother in 2019, I have continued to pursue my passion for teaching math part-time via various platforms.

My philosophy that drives my teaching is that every student is a unique person who is worthy of my time. I have the patience to work with students who are struggling in math and the ability to push students who are naturally inclined towards math. My goals when working with students are to teach and encourage.

When I'm not teaching/tutoring I can be found snuggling my babies, spending quality time with friends and family, and playing disc golf with my wonderful husband.
