Worksheets will be posted for students to practice what they have learned in an effort to reinforce the instruction received.
Assessment
Informal assessments will be given each week with a formal assessment provided as homework every two weeks. Assessments are used to determine student understanding of strategies being taught.

Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 6
This multi-day course will meet 2xwk and cover 5th and 6th grade content.  Each week will cover new content designed to review 5th grade and expose learner's to 6th grade expectations.  Content will not build on previous lessons, so learners may begin course at any point.
Using an I Do, We Do, You Do instructional model, instructor will explain a concept then allow learners to work through problems with the instructor's guidance concluding each lesson with the learner working independently to solve problems.
Topics will follow this schedule:
Week 1:   Multiplying Multi-Digit Numbers and Decimals
Week 2:  Dividing Whole Numbers and Decimals
Week 3: Adding and Subtracting Fractions and Mixed Numbers
Week 4: Multiplying and Dividing Fractions and Mixed Numbers
Week 5: 3D Figures - how to find area and volume
Week 6: Measurement conversions
Week 7: Understanding Integers
Week 8: Expressions - What they are and how to work them
Learners will solve word problems and explain the rationale behind their responses to increase learner's ability to critically-think while engaging in academic discourse. Each session will heavily rely on learner's to engage in the learning process by working problems and sharing responses and strategies used to allow for instructor feedback and direction.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to solve and explain mathematical concepts using word problems.  Learners may communicate specific needs they have so that instructor can incorporate learner-directed instruction into the session format.  The goal of each session will be providing learner with a strategy to problem-solve.
