Hello Book Lovers! In this multi-week course we will explore Gordan Korman's "Restart", a tale of bullying, self discovery and reformation. Students will build on their vocabulary, reading comprehension and creative writing skills. Each week: - Students will read through multiple chapters of "Restart" as a group, taking turns reading and pausing for important discussion - Students will then have follow up assignments asking comprehension and vocabulary questions - There will also be a bonus assignment each week with a different language arts theme - At the beginning of the following lesson, students will share their learning and we will take up vocabulary and comprehension questions of the previous week Week 1: - Lesson 1: Focus on Prediction - Students will be introduced to the book and we will discuss our first thoughts based on the cover and preface - As a group, we will read through Chapters 1-2 pausing for discussion - Then, there will be a lesson on Prediction and I will explain this week's "Focus Activity" of making predictions based on evidence from the text - I will outline the weekly vocabulary and comprehension worksheet which include vocabulary words, comprehension questions, text-to-self connection question and a character study question - Students will be provided time to ask questions and begin the course work Lesson 2: Focus on Setting - As a group, we will read through chapters 3-4 pausing for discussion - Then, there will be a lesson on Setting and I will explain this week's "Focus Activity" of mapping out the setting in a particular scene in the novel - I will outline the weekly vocabulary and comprehension worksheet which include vocabulary words, comprehension questions, text-to-self connection question and a character study question - Students will be provided time to ask questions and begin the course work Week 2: - Lesson 3: Focus on Visualization - As a group, we will read through Chapters 5-6 pausing for discussion - Then, there will be a lesson on Visualization and I will explain this week's "Focus Activity" of drawing out student's mental pictures of the contents of the novel using their 5 senses - I will outline the weekly vocabulary and comprehension worksheet which include vocabulary words, comprehension questions, text-to-self connection question and a character study question - Students will be provided time to ask questions and begin the course work Lesson 4: Focus on Point of View - As a group, we will read through chapters 7-8 pausing for discussion (Chapter 9 will be homework) - Then, there will be a lesson on Point of View and I will explain this week's "Focus Activity" of comparing two character's viewpoints on a certain situation in the novel - I will outline the weekly vocabulary and comprehension worksheet which include vocabulary words, comprehension questions, text-to-self connection question and a character study question - Students will be provided time to ask questions and begin the course work Week 3: - Lesson 5: Focus on Main Events - As a group, we will read through Chapters 10-11 pausing for discussion (Chapter 12 will be homework) - Then, there will be a lesson on Main Events and I will explain this week's "Focus Activity" of outlining the Main Events in the this week's chapters using transition words and summarizing details - I will outline the weekly vocabulary and comprehension worksheet which include vocabulary words, comprehension questions, text-to-self connection question and a character study question - Students will be provided time to ask questions and begin the course work Lesson 6: Focus on Summarization - As a group, we will read through chapters 13-14 pausing for discussion (Chapter 15 will be homework) - Then, there will be a lesson on Summarization and I will explain this week's "Focus Activity" of creating a comic to summarize the events in the story - I will outline the weekly vocabulary and comprehension worksheet which include vocabulary words, comprehension questions, text-to-self connection question and a character study question - Students will be provided time to ask questions and begin the course work Week 4: - Lesson 7: Focus on Perspective - As a group, we will read through Chapters 16-17 pausing for discussion (Chapter 18 will be homework) - Then, there will be a lesson on Perspective and I will explain this week's "Focus Activity": Students will be writing a diary entry from the perspective of one of the main characters - I will outline the weekly vocabulary and comprehension worksheet which include vocabulary words, comprehension questions, text-to-self connection question and a character study question - Students will be provided time to ask questions and begin the course work Lesson 8: Focus on Figurative Language - As a group, we will read through chapters 19-20 pausing for discussion (Chapter 21 will be homework) - Then, there will be a lesson on Figurative Language and I will explain this week's "Focus Activity": Students will learn the difference between metaphors and similes, disect quotes from the text and create their own - I will outline the weekly vocabulary and comprehension worksheet which include vocabulary words, comprehension questions, text-to-self connection question and a character study question - Students will be provided time to ask questions and begin the course work Week 5: - Lesson 9: Focus on Character Transformations - As a group, we will read through Chapters 22-23 pausing for discussion (Chapter 24 will be homework) - Then, there will be a lesson on Character Transformations and I will explain this week's "Focus Activity": Students analyze the transformation of the main character Chase - I will outline the weekly vocabulary and comprehension worksheet which include vocabulary words, comprehension questions, text-to-self connection question and a character study question - Students will be provided time to ask questions and begin the course work Lesson 10: Focus on Character Traits - As a group, we will read through chapters 25-26 pausing for discussion (Chapter 27 will be homework) - Then, there will be a lesson on Character Traits and I will explain this week's "Focus Activity": Students will create their own "yearbook" of the characters in the novel. They will draw pictures of each character and come up with year book quotes that reflect their traits. - I will outline the weekly vocabulary and comprehension worksheet which include vocabulary words, comprehension questions, text-to-self connection question and a character study question - Students will be provided time to ask questions and begin the course work Week 6: - Lesson 11: Focus on Plot - As a group, we will read through Chapters 28-30 pausing for discussion (Finishing the novel!) - Then, there will be a lesson on Plot and I will explain this week's "Focus Activity": Students create inventive plot diagrams outlining the characters, setting, problem, solution, and conclusion to the novel - I will outline the weekly vocabulary and comprehension worksheet which include vocabulary words, comprehension questions, text-to-self connection question and a character study question - I will then outline the culminating task options which include: Creating a Sequel, Book Vlog, Book Trailer, Play based on Events in the Novel, Anti-Bullying Campaign, Alternate Ending, Board Game based on Events in Novel - Students will be provided time to ask questions and begin the course work Lesson 12: Show and Tell of Culminating Task! - Students will take turns explaining, reading, demonstrating or acting out their culminating task! - Closing remarks on the novel and discussion on bullying and how we can work to make a difference just as Chase made a change in the novel. This is meant to be a fun experience for all book lovers, to share and laugh with peers and enhance their skills in literacy!
Learning Goals
LesStudents will enhance their vocabulary and reading comprehension through enjoyment of "Restart".
Students will build on their abilities to predict, visualize, summarize, and analyze characters, plot and theme within literature.
Students will explore their creativity through creative writing and build on use of figurative language, story structure and elements, and revision and editing.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
This novel includes themes of tragedy (a boy who suffers amnesia and a concussion), bullying and self-discovery. It is an uplifting novel, and I will allow for open discussion on the harms of bullying and how we can act to protect victims and prevent instances.
Supply List
A two-page handout will be provided per lesson, as well as materials for the bonus assignments depending on the task. It is suggested that students have a copy of "Restart" by Gordon Korman, which can be purchased on Amazon or Indigo.
