Class Experience

In this class we will discuss the topic of character and the character principle of Responsibility.

Class will meet for 4 weeks, once a week, for 45 minutes. I intentionally keep these classes small so we have opportunities to discuss responsibility and the many topics surrounding the character quality. In class we will learn how responsibility applies to life, how to encourage others to be responsible, how sometimes our actions are irresponsible and why responsibility is important.

To help learners understand the concept more thoroughly, I will introduce responsibility through the study of science/nature and history. In class 2, will learn about eagles, their habitat, body language, and how they can teach us to be responsible. In class 3, we will learn about our 1st president, George Washington, how he showed responsibility, and how his character helped him throughout his career.

During the 4 classes we will read books, make crafts, and have time to discuss ideas. We will also memorize a poem to help connect learners with this concept. I will also have some optional materials that parents might want to review to continue learning about this topic after our class has ended.

Our class structure will be similar to the following...

Class 1: Introductions, learning about character, defining responsibility, learning poem, video, discussion, and activity

Class 2: Learning about eagles and responsibility, book reading, discussion, poem review, video, and craft

Class 3: Learning about president George Washington and responsibility, book reading, poem review, video, and craft

Class 4: Learning how to apply responsibility into real life situations, book reading, poem review, video, and craft

*Crafts involve simple basics of paper or paper plates, crayons or markers, and scissors.

Each class we will discuss how being both responsible and irresponsible can impact us and those around us. After 4 classes, learners will clearly understand the principle of responsibility and will have many tools to help remind them of how important responsibility is.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
During the eagle themed class we will learn and see, how eagles prey on other animals. Also, the discussion surrounding George Washington involves some illness, war, and other aspects of history that might be sensitive, but it does show Washington's responsibility.
Supply List
I will provide any worksheets to be printed, but they are for follow up, not required as homework. All activities will require things that most homes have... glue, construction paper, ruler, and the like. If these are unavailable, we will improvise! Books read in class will NOT need to be purchased by parents. Books that are recommended for further study are optional.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been a teacher on Outschool since 2020 and I teach on 2 additional online platforms. I have a biology background, however, I studied US and World History for 3 years in college, as well as 2 years of Chinese. I have also trained in a non-credited format, for many years, with an author and speaker who specializes in teaching children character qualities.

I have always enjoyed teaching. My first teaching position was in Moscow, Russia, teaching English as a second language. Since then, I’ve taught in various settings which include a cooperative, a preschool, and as a tutor in the areas of math, science, and English. I also am a homeschool mom!

I have taught this class to different groups at a cooperative, for both lower and upper elementary students. I enjoy teaching a subject or principle and including different areas of study along with the original idea.
