Class Experience

In this ongoing class, students will have group discussions about how their actions and other's action can affect the community in a positive or negative way. We will discuss certain actions, (littering, picking up trash, helping a neighbor), and how this can help create a positive community. Students will discuss negative actions and how they can negatively affect the community. I will ask the students higher-level critical thinking questions to get them thinking deeper about the topics. "What if everyone threw their candy wrappers out the window?", "What if everyone in the community cut in front of people in line at the local gas station?", "How would actions like this affect the community?", "How do you think these actions would alter the community in a positive or negative way?", "What if everyone helped their neighbor when they needed something?", "How would this affect the overall perspective of the community?". Students will be able to respectfully collaborate on ideas and determine what their personal responsibilities are and how it can affect their home. (Listening to parents, eating all the food on their plate, being kind to their siblings). Students will think of the common goals in the community and in their homes and what they can do to help achieve those goals. Students will learn that everyone is accountable for their actions and the choices that they make. Students will need a pencil and paper to take notes throughout the class, but no other materials are necessary.

Week 1 Topic- How can actions affect the community?
Students will collaborate and discuss how actions can affect the community. Each student will come up with an action and as a class, we will discuss the positive or negative impact the action could have on the community. We will be using higher-level thinking questions to think critically and deeply about the topic. Students will take notes throughout the class and send their notes to me after class.

Week 2 Topic- What are some common goals that people of a community share?
Students will collaborate and discuss some of the common goals people have in their community and how actions can positively or negatively affect the overall goals. Students will discuss some of the simple actions that they can take to help achieve the goals. Students will use critical thinking skills to discuss this topic. Students will take notes throughout class and send their notes to me after class.

Week 3 Topic- What are some examples of different communities and how do their goals compare/are different?
Students will collaborate and discuss different examples of communities such as, home, town, school, work and how their common goals are similar or different. Students will make a list of common goals in all of these communities and how different actions can be made by each person to help achieve these goals. Students will take notes throughout class and send their notes to me after class.

Week 4 Topic- How are your responsibilities different in different settings?
Students will discuss different settings and the responsibilities they have in each setting. How does their actions affect others in these settings? What are small things that they can do to make a positive impact in these settings? Students will collaborate and discuss these different ideas and how their actions make an impact in different settings. Students will take notes throughout class and send their notes to me after class.
